West Brom 2-2 Wrexham: Furious Phil Parkinson to contact Kevin Friend, demanding answers

Furious Phil Parkinson vows to contact Kevin Friend, demanding answers over a decision against his side in West Brom and Wrexham’s 2-2 draw.

The Wrexham boss didn’t hold back after the final whistle, saying he would send a dossier of incidents to the head of the Championship’s match officials.

He vented his frustration at a penalty his Wrexham side conceded late in the first half when Issa Kabore was adjudged to have brought down West Brom’s Jayson Molumby.

Wrexham sit 6th with 64 points from 40 games played, a point above 7th place Southampton, who have a game in hand. West Brom are 20th with 44 points from 40 games played, and are 4 points above the drop zone.

Phil Parkinson spoke on with referees costing Wrexham: “If you give a penalty for that, you’re giving three or four penalties every game.

“I can’t believe an experienced referee has got CONNED really by Molumby. He’s thrown himself to the floor. Of course, there is contact but it’s only what you see in the penalty box all the time. Very, very harsh decision.

“You need help from referees and when you get a referee from the top level you expect better.

[Did you speak to Bobby Madley?]

“I have, briefly. The other thing I’m getting very frustrated with is the treatment Sam Smith has been getting.

“All you guys who watch us… Watford away, the amount of times he got hauled to the floor and blocked and body checked. I sent all of those incidents to the head of referees and he agreed with me on nearly every one.

“We then go to Sheffield United and Tanganga pulls him down, which is a straight red card and the free-kick gets given against Smudge. In the 53rd minute today there is a slide through pass that puts him through and Phillips just tugs him. It’s only a slight contact but it’s a red card and I feel Smudge needs more protection from referees on the whole.

“I’m going to send all those incidents together and ask the referees over the next two days to give me some answers. He’s had some bad decisions against him.

[Concerned calls could cost you?]

“Yeah, of course, I’m always in communication with Kevin Friend, the head of the referees, because he’s a great guy and he listens. But when the ref reviews those incidents tonight he’ll know I’m right and he’s WRONG.” #WxmAFC

West Brom interim boss James Morrison, per BBC Sport:

“A game of two halves wasn’t it? I thought we were excellent in the first half, we had control.

“I talked about the importance of staying in the game and not giving too much away, 90 seconds into the second half the momentum changes.

“Wrexham have some good players and they’re a good team, we had to weather the storm.”

Morrison, per Sky Sports:

“The referees said they were going to punish it (holding at corners) and clamp down on it, and I haven’t seen it all season.

“So I’ll take that all day. I think he did push Jayson to the ground so it’s a correct decision.

“It’s another game ticked off. It’s a good point.”

Here’s the social media reaction after a furious Phil Parkinson says he is to contact Kevin Friend, demanding answers after West Brom and Wrexham’s 2-2 draw…

@wxm_afc: Parky lad, that’s a definite Penalty, not the 1st time he’s done it too. The ball was going to the player and he rugby tackled him. You have to take him away from the box because he’s so clumsy. Stick him on the post or up top, so he’s nowhere near a player.

@JJSportsPromLtd: Sorry mate but that was one of the most blatant penalties of the season. He is right though they should all be given as penalties and it might start to cut it all out.

@matthewdmarsden: What an utter whiner. Absolute stonewall penalty.

@cahatton30: What a clown! That’s a pen! Nothing on number 12 who should have been sent off! The ref definitely had a brown envelope at half time!

@dezroberts1: What good spell did we have in the first half 🤯 100% penalty too, Kabore ain’t even looking at the ball. We were terrible first half. Equalised & then we sat back again 😬

@amcscfc: Pipe down Parky lad!! It’s a clear Pen ya Numpty. I agree, we shud see more pens given for fouls like that, maybe put a stop to the blatant fouls!? But let’s not pretend that your team haven’t been the No1 beneficiaries of Dubois Decisions in the history of the game!!!

@jay74397972: To be fair parky needs us to get playing from the first minute not second half, becoming a habit now of sitting back first 45 mins. Second half when wingbacks do actually push forward and the midfield look to pass quicker we a completely different team.

@Valvenus1: Thought Wrexham deserved a point great second half display, but Parkinson is hanging on by his finger nails won’t be there next season only my opinion #

@Gez4WxmAFCB2B2B: Seemed to sit back at 2-2
