Wayne Rooney and Rob Edwards on Plymouth’s 3-1 win over Luton with update on Tahith Chong

Wayne Rooney and Rob Edwards give their verdict after Plymouth’s 3-1 win over Luton with an update given on Tahith Chong.

Ibrahim Cissoko scored twice at Home Park after Rami Al Hajj opened the scoring in the first half, and Victor Moses pulled one back for visitors in second half.

There was concern for Tahith Chong during the Championship fixture after he took a blow to the head and laid out on the pitch with medics rushing over and checked with him for several minutes.

After receiving treatment, the 24-year-old managed to make his way to the dressing room with the aid of doctors and physios but had a large bump on his head.

Rob Edwards said after the game: ‘He’s up and about and fine. So we’ll see the extent of it concussion wise. He was a bit sore but he’s fine.’

Luton said via their social media channels: “Tahith was able to walk to the dressing room after a period on the floor during stoppage time of the first half.”

Plymouth’s Wayne Rooney told Sky Sports:

We were underestimated at the start of the season before we kicked a ball and then especially after the first game. But I think we’ve shown real character, we’ve shown the type of team we want to be, we’re getting the ball forward and creating chances.

“It’s a big win for us tonight against a good Luton team. It’s a big win for a lot of our young players. I was delighted for the lads tonight, delighted for the fans – great atmosphere again, so a great start to the weekend.”

On Ibrahim Cissoko: “He’s a fantastic player and he showed his ability tonight when he came on. It wasn’t so easy telling him he wasn’t playing.

“I felt late on in the game, I said to him yesterday, ‘Just trust in me, you’re going to come on and win us the game’. It’s always great as a manager when that happens and it shows to be true.”

 Rooney told BBC Sport:

“I thought it was a good performance for different reasons.

“I thought first half we were good at times, controlled the tempo of the game and Luton tried to press us, and I think when we showed composure and played through the press we caused them problems.

“Second half we were a little bit sloppy with the ball and gave it away in dangerous areas at times, but I thought defensively our back four, and in particular the two centre-backs, were excellent.

“Luton are very good at set-pieces and I thought we were brilliant defending them and showed great character and desire to go and head the ball, and then the attacking players get all the praise when they score the goals.”

Luton’s Rob Edwards told Sky Sports:

“At both ends of the pitch we weren’t good enough – they defended very well and we didn’t. Credit to them for defending well and being ruthless and we weren’t.

“I won’t make excuses and losing three players in the game doesn’t help but it’s not why we lost. It’s disappointing to lose any game, I feel for our fans who travelled all this way because they’re desperate for us to do well but we have to dust ourselves down and get ready for Tuesday.”

Edwards told BBC Sport:

“Credit to the opposition, at both ends of the pitch they were better – they were more ruthless at one end and defended better at the other.

“I think we got into their final third 40-odd times, twice as often as they did, but we didn’t make their goalkeeper work enough.

“We weren’t clinical enough at one and end then didn’t defend well enough at the other -it’s not a good recipe to win a football match.

“It’s really frustrating to come away losing a game talking about both ends of the pitch.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Wayne Rooney and Rob Edwards speaks on Plymouth’s 3-1 win over Luton with an update also given on Tahith Chong…

@LTFCShirts: Doughty only person who turned up, time for changes top to bottom

@RobsonOReardon: Abysmal. Improvements needed, and that’s an understatement to say the least.

@HellholeIsland: Unlucky, lads, good side Plymouth but beating them isn’t for everyone.

@Ted_WFC: M1 is yellow lads, don’t let bottom of the relegation hit you on the way down the table 🤡🤡🤡🤣🤣🤣

@Gentz001: Yeah Edwards has been Naive but lets not act like the club showed any ambition, The warning signs were when they decided to make 1 fullback signing in January then again in the summer what exciting players did they bring none. Moses on the free was probably the best signing.

@matt39728060: Edwards out. No excuse, got a promotion of a NJ team and tactics but can’t hack it on his own

@ScudderKieran: Get Clark out now, robbing a place in the team every week, performance all round woeful

@StevieWotsa: Unlucky lads tbh you went into a melting pot. When you make a fortress you’re pretty unstoppable as it was at Kenilworth road! Fair play to the player in the picture he took some stick and took it on the chin, Good pro!! Safe journey home Luton fans.

@chrisnev166: We are fucking awful. Plymouth weren’t even that good. Just countered into the gaping holes we left playing these shit tactics. All on Rob this.

@chrisnev166: Ask him a proper question FFS. The formation is the issue! Teams figured us out and we have no plan B. Opposition have loads of space to play into as we have a massive hole between the defence and midfield. Why put round pegs in square holes rather than change shape?

@Frogiscool23: Not a happy clapper in any sense but please don’t consider yourself a fan if your calling for his head, we move onto the next we’ve been through far worst as a club.

@Sean_N_10: The results vs Millwall and Sheff Weds overshadowed what were below average performances. Tonight showed just how many cracks there are. The team and the attitude needs to change, no shape, no identity, and no points tonight.

@pafc_brad: How the fuck did you lot get in the prem fucking pathetic team 😂😂😂 cheers for the points

@fargo9090: Come on Rob sort it out, we need that passion back, players have to bring the belief out in the fans, fans want to see players fighting for the badge. Atmosphere is dross because our football is boring and negative

@NytroLTFC: Absolutely fucking wank tonight. This formation and the tactics do not work. Edwards doesn’t seem to have another option. All three goals wank defending. It could’ve been 5 or 6 and we could have no arguments. Ejihah. Awful. Clark. Awful. Hardly any positives. Joke #COYH #LTFC

@sjdhatters: If Edwards doesn’t change the way we play and look at the system he is in big trouble. Because this isn’t working and hasn’t been working for some time. #COYH

@killawat:
Carrying too many players – Chong, Clark, Adebayo
Set pieces consistently poor
No plan B
Formation all over the place
Players in the wrong positions.
So very poor. Something needs change quickly
