Watford taunt Luton fans with chant and hand gestures after derby day win for the Hornets

Watford taunt Luton fans with a chant and some hand gestures after a derby day win for the Hornets, putting more pressure on the Hatters.

All too easy for Watford as they ease to victory in the M1 derby, recording back-to-back victories for the first time since the start of November and just three points off the Championship top six.

As for Luton, they’re now five points adrift at the bottom and it’s 12 games without a win now and their hunt for a first victory under Matt Bloomfield goes on.

Watford fans were heard singing “Luton get battered everywhere they go” while others waved goodbye to the away end and also pointed down ‘for relegation’.

BBC Sport wrote: “From Premier League football nine months ago, Luton Town are staring down the barrel of playing in League One in August.

“Their 20th defeat of the season sees the Hatters rooted to the foot of the Championship table and five points adrift of safety, having played a game more than Hull and Cardiff.

“It’s eight games without a win under Matt Bloomfield and 12 without victory in the league altogether (D3 L9).”

Robyn Cowen (Sky Sports commentator): “Watford can celebrate. As routine a win as you’ll see in the Championship this season.

“The damage was done in the first half and Watford didn’t really have to get out of first gear in the second half.

“Luton tried but a lack of quality has given way to a lack of belief.

“Are they resigned to their fate? Back-to-back relegations a real possibility.”

Aaron Paul (BBC Radio 5 Live at Vicarage Road): “Derby day belongs to Watford.

“The game defines Luton’s season – not good enough in every department.

“The stats are damning. One away win in 27, 20 defeats this season, five points off safety and staring at back-to-back relegations.

“Watford weren’t even that good – they just wanted it more.”

Rachel Corsie (on Sky Sports): “Today was an opportunity (for Luton).

“You’re playing your rivals and this is when form and league position becomes not so relevant.

“There’s that build up, you understand what’s expected, but they gave themselves an uphill battle because they concede so early and that was the last thing Matt Bloomfield would have wanted.

“The second half they were better, but the game was almost already gone from them.

“I thought Watford were excellent.”

Watford boss Tom Cleverley told BBC Three Counties Radio:

“It’s not easy playing in these derbies, or preparing for them like they’re a normal game because they’re not, so to get on the front foot like we did and to have the character to play the way we wanted to was important.

“Mamadou Doumbia has brought chasing lost causes to our team, being willing to run, to stretch defences, maybe he’s not had direct assists or goals, but he’s having a big part to play in pretty much every goal we’re scoring at the minute.

“There’s a certain stage where you’ve got to manage the game and go from front foot to a bit more protective and we maybe did that a little bit too early – but when we did have to manage the game and see out a bit of pressure, we stood up to it.

“Take the local rivalry out of it, it was an important game for us to get three points in, in terms of our league position.”

Luton Town manager Matt Bloomfield told BBC Look East:

“The players are obviously extremely disappointed with the result and really disappointed not to give our supporters something to cheer about because they turned up in incredible numbers and backed us.

“For the first five or six minutes I thought we were OK and played in Watford’s half, took the sting out of them early on, then we gave the penalty away and the second goal was again loose from us – and at 2-0 down it rocked us, understandably so.

“We made changes at half-time, gave ourselves a foothold and grew back into the game and if we’d turned one of those opportunities into a goal, you never know what will happen from there.

“The boys are still fighting, they still passed, they probed, they still created chances, but we need to take one of those opportunities at 0-0, not 2-0 down.”

Twitter users reacted as Watford taunt Luton fans with chant and hand gestures after a derby day win for the Hornets…

@CheeesyChips: Doesn’t seem possible that just last season Luton were a premier league team, they look very much a league 1 team already, no fight, no passion, easily beaten in a derby game.

@JackoWFC_: Fucking love this team! Tom has transformed our mentality and I haven’t felt this proud and connected with our team in years. Fucking get in lads, all of you worked your socks off 👏🏻💛🐝

@LTFCShirts: Relegation a certainty. Club got too attached to Edwards, hired nice guy Bloomfield instead of an old school coach. 2020 really ruined Luton in two seasons.

@LTFC_HK: At least maybe I’ll remember what it’s like to win a a game in League One

@duzza007: 🤣🤣🤣 Double relegation lads. Hahaha how embarrassing lads, lap of honour fc in league 1

@RM_Mili_History: Can we apply to join league 1 now. I said 2 weeks ago that was that. Feel sorry for the manager as it’s not his fault imo. Spineless board and players who seem to have given up. Irregardless of the January window.

@andy_jones23: Just another game where the opposition hardly have to make an effort get an easy win against us. I’d bin off the majority of this squad on the spot if I could. #LTFC

@jamie_castle96: Huge reset button needs pressing in May, right throughout the club, top to bottom. 21 months ago we won promotion to the Premier League and now we’re five points adrift at the bottom of the Championship. Never been more embarrassed in my life following this football club. #LTFC

@NytroLTFC:
Fuck the lot of them. Every single one can go. Embarrassing.
That was a spineless weak performance
Get the lot gone
#LTFC

@NickPates: The board have rightly so been hammered for the way they’ve dealt with things this year but today was on the players. Some of them earn good money and put in a performance like that and not for the first time this season. Clear the 💩 out in the summer and start again. #LTFC

@LewisT_Williams: The only positive is we didn’t lose the second half, that’s it. I won’t enjoy watching us play until the players are gone. I’ve been patient/supportive with Bloomfield but you’ve got to learn quickly here. Can’t wait for the season to end. #LTFC

@Ryan_LTFC: This may be a massive meltdown, however we’ve sold our soul. We are not the Luton we once were. We’ve have concentrated on our new fancy ground and sold our personality, our fight & heart for it. This is the worst ive felt being a Luton fan in all the years I’ve been a supporter
