Watford fans’ strange reaction to goal, song about Coleen Rooney, and late Plymouth comeback

Watford fans gave a strange reaction to a goal their side had, sang a song about Coleen Rooney, and Plymouth produced a late comeback.

Andre Gray netted a late equaliser to make it 2-2 in the 96th minute, as Wayne Rooney’s side stretched their unbeaten Championship home run to six.

The former Watford forward struck from just inside the penalty area after receiving a pass from substitute striker Mustapha Bundu during the sixth and final minute of stoppage time.

Watford, who controlled possession in the early stages, went ahead after just nine minutes when Vakoun Bayo converted Yasser Larouci’s left-wing cross at the far post, beating goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw.

Gray levelled the scoreline in the 23rd minute with an impressive right-footed volley, getting on the end of a long ball from skipper Lewis Gibson that came from deep within his own half.

He allowed the high ball to descend before guiding it past Daniel Bachmann, who was fully extended in the Watford goal, finding the net at the far post.

Defender Ryan Porteous then restored Watford’s lead to 2-1 with a well-placed finish, directing Mattie Pollock’s cross from the right as he slid into the six-yard box.

However, Gray had the last word, securing a point for Plymouth in another late comeback.

This is the 5th time already this season that Argyle have scored a goal in stoppage time at Home Park.

3-2 Sunderland: Edwards (93)
3-1 Luton: Cissoko (93)
2-1 Blackburn: Whittaker (97)
3-3 Preston: Whittaker (97)
2-2 Watford: Gray (96)

Plymouth boss Wayne Rooney per Sky Sports:

“I was confident we could get a late goal, because we’ve done it a few times now and there is that belief, especially when the fans get behind you.

“They’ve got the best player in the league but I thought after the first 10 minutes and going a goal down we did well to get back in it.

“We spread our centre-backs out a bit more in the second half and played better.

“We created a few more chances and the lads who came on made a difference.

“It was a fantastic goal from Andre. It’s really difficult to score like that, a ball over the shoulder, I know how difficult that is to take, and it’s a world-class finish. Andre’s second goal was a fantastic finish.

“We have got a lot of games coming up between now and January and you can see the quality he has got.

“I am sure before January there will be conversations about him staying.”

Rooney told BBC Sport:

“I’m delighted in the end to get a point, I think Watford are a very good team, a very powerful team.

“The first 10 minutes I thought we couldn’t get to grips with the game.

“After they scored we did well to get back into the game – it was a fantastic goal from Andre and I thought we were OK after that, we settled into our shape a little bit and then we conceded a terrible goal from our point of view.

“But then I thought there was a real shift in mentality second half, we spread our centre-backs out a little bit more and made it more difficult for them to put pressure on us.

“I thought the lads who came on made a difference again, which is really important for us, and in the end we deserved a point.”

Watford boss Tom Cleverley, per Sky Sports:

“If you reduce Plymouth to what we did this evening, you win this nine times out of 10.

“I felt that we had so many opportunities in transition, we just weren’t clinical enough.

“I can’t be too angry with the players, it was everything we asked for. We asked for a real underdog mentality when we haven’t got the ball.

“In possession we showed real class and calmness, we just didn’t get the third goal that you always feel you need when you come here – they score a lot of late goals and that’s what’s undone us today.

“Sometimes goals are scored against the odds. It’s taken an absolute wonder strike to get the equaliser.

“Andre’s hit a strike that’s a once-in-a-career goal and it hurts.

“As an ex-player and ex team-mate sometimes that gives a player an extra 10 per cent.

“Andre’s performance in the final third is what got them a point today.”

Cleverley told BBC Sport:

“If you reduce Plymouth to what we did this evening, you win this nine times out of 10.

“I felt that we had so many opportunities in transition, we just weren’t clinical enough.

“I can’t be too angry with the players, it was everything we asked for, we asked for a real underdog mentality when we haven’t got the ball.

“In possession we showed real class and calmness, we just didn’t get the third goal that you always feel you need when you come here – they score a lot of late goals and that’s what’s undone us today.”

There was plenty of reaction on Twitter after Watford fans’ strange reaction to goal, the song about Coleen Rooney, and the late Plymouth comeback…

@Athletics_World: SIX SECONDS between goal and noise!!

@CriesInScouse: Fans were buffering

@tigerroarcouk: “Have we scored?”, “I dunno, have we?”, “I think we have”, “YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH”

@J7_WBA: Watford fans must have input delay or something

@DLocke168: When the Firestick’s 10 seconds behind

@lwestlake7: Watford got exactly what they deserved! Embarrassing time wasting spending most of the 2nd half on the floor! For gray to score a beauty top bins to snatch a poin Against his former club! ! Roooney’s green army! Up the @Argyle #pafc #PLYWAT

@taylorjhn1: Let’s be honest, that was yet another dire performance and two moments of brilliance from Gray have saved us! Still think we are in big, big trouble! #pafc

@grrooves: No sugar coating that though. Some very poor players at this club. #pafc

@PilgrimCas1437: ‘Andre, what’s the score, Andre, Andre what’s the score’ ? #watfordfc #pafc

@EvanGale5: If your still leaving Home Park early then your mental. #pafc

@Adam_Price17: We didn’t deserve anything from that. But I LOVE seeing awful time wasters get their comeuppance. #pafc

@aa_wilkinson: Jokes aside tho.. How have we got 5 points from Pompey, Derby and Watford. We’re so fucking bad 😂😂😂 #pafc

@DanHarvey74: Travesty but brought it on ourselves, unforgiveable really to not see that game out. Never see the sense in making subs in injury time, only unsettles the team and the wasted time gets added on anyway. Very annoying. #watfordfc

@JRP1881: Some of the worst game management you will ever see- against the worst side we’ll play all year #watfordfc
