Viewers rage at Martin Atkinson’s bizarre decision in Soucek – Wan-Bissaka incident

Viewers rage at Martin Atkinson’s bizarre decision in the Soucek – Wan-Bissaka incident during West Ham’s game against Man Utd.

On the 68th minute, with the score a one apiece, Tomas Soucek goes down in the box after a sliding challenge from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

There was huge appeals from the home fans but it was then given as a free-kick the other way. Fair to say didn’t look like a foul from Soucek at all, so was he offside?

Minutes later, there was another penalty appeal but this time from Manchester United. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped past Vladimir Coufal and went down claiming contact. It looked like Ronaldo ran into Coufal more than anything and that’s what the referee thinks.

MATCH REPORT:

On the 30th minute, West Ham took the lead and it was a huge deflection from Raphael Varane.

Jarrod Bowen squared it to Said Benrahma on the edge of the box. He was in acres of space and tried to curl it into the right corner.

Varane tureds his back to get a block on and it bounced off him wildly, deceiving David de Gea and bouncing into the opposite corner.

It might end up going down as an own goal but for now, it’s with Benrahma.

The on the 34th minute, there was no mistake this time as Bruno Fernandes curled the ball in, Cristiano Ronaldo flicked it towards goal and Lukasz Fabianski made an initial save.

It landed about a yard off the line, with Fabianski unable to react as Ronaldo poked in the rebound.

There was quick VAR check for offside but it ended up standing.

West Ham’s hearts were crushed when on the 88th minute, former loanee Jesse Lingard buried it home, making it 2-1 to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

A sore sight for the majority at the London Stadium as Lingard, who showed his quality here last season for the Hammers, has just dealt what looks like the winning blow for Manchester United.

There was nothing on for Lingard as he crept inside the box but he sent it beautifully into the top right corner.

He didn’t celebrate, instead holding his arms up, but he couldn’t help but cheekily smile.

Anymore late drama? You bet ya. On the 4th minute of injury time, West Ham were handed a penalty.

Mark Noble only just came on as a substitute to replace Jarrod Bowen. He took the penalty, and it was saved by De Gea, then the full time whistle blew. Crushing blow again for West Ham, with the result taking them to 8th and the Red Devils to second in the Premier League table.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes: “The two of the have to of course work together, for me the two are great players. Cristiano arrives at the box as he always does.”

On penalty appeals: “The first two, stonewall pens”

On Jesse Lingard’s goal: “So happy for Jesse, he had a tough evening on Tuesday, he knuckled down, he’s a positive lad, so happy for him. A good turn by Jesse, good finish.”

On Mark Noble: “I’ve seen him score so many penalties, sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it goes against you.”

On what went well for Manchester United: “The attacking football, the movement. We’ve got to work better defensively, this is something we will work on.”

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard speaking to Sky Sports after scoring against the club he was on loan at last season: “I got a brilliant reception. I had a good time here but I have to move on with Man utd and do my best with Man Utd.”

On his error against Young Boys in midweek: “Mistakes happen in football, you have to overcome those things.”

David de Gea on his penalty save: “It was the last minute, I made the save. A massive three points for us. Going through my head was ‘save the ball’.

“It was a really tough game, both teams had good chances, again a great goal from Jesse.

“It is a massive three points. In the dressing room we said the three points were the most important thing.”

West Ham boss David Moyes to BBC Sport: “We got a penalty kick and I have one of the best penalty takers in the Premier Leage and Europe. I think if I hadn’t made the decision I’d have been more annoyed with myself.

“I asked him and he said I’m ready, he has a great record, why would we not? We’ve missed a few recently so I thought I’d take the opportunity to bring Mark on.

“I thnk are all enjoying the game more because of how the referees are going about their jobs, I thought the referee did a great job today.”

On new signings Kurt Zouma and Nikola Vlasic: “Kurt Zouma played very well. Consideing we’re bringing them in very quicky… Kurt has more Premier League experience. Vlasic, we’ve had to put in a little bit quicker than we would have done so.

“We didn’t deserve defeat. You’d say it was a proper game.”

On Jesse Lingard goal: “Football has strange way of bouncing back and today he scored the goal. I hope we do the same next week.”

On Jimmy Greaves: “Tremendous by both sets of supporters, he was recognised throught football and I got to see him on Saint ahd Greavsie. A sad passing and he will be remembered well.”

@RolfToree: 100% penalty! ROBBERY

@MattBlissett93: How on earth that isn’t a penalty I will never know

@PopsleyBigguns: Hahahah Martin Atkinson is taking the piss now. Wan Bissaka just went through the back of Soucek’s ankles in the penalty box and he gives a free kick to Man Utd.

@PricelessEddie_: Varcheater United strikes again shameless of a club

@AllEnglandFlags: Martin Atkinson given the worst foul I’ve ever seen there. Soucek absolutely wiped out and gives it united. Horrific bias.

@PlayersTrombone: Lino doesn’t flag, Atkinson gives a foul AGAINST Soucek. Utterly fucking bizarre.

@stuart_harris91: Probably one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen

@WHULasty: The commentators saying that is a pen but ours wasn’t is a piss take. Wan bissaka flew in at soucek

@garyhall19: We could do with some sort of video assistance for our referees

@PopsleyBigguns: I genuinely can’t believe that isn’t a penalty. Like please….someone explain to me how that is not a penalty.

@sachhjay: Such a poor decision

@Billy_Nev: Stonewall Pen

@dontgiveitmate: How does VAR not even check that

@The_BoleynBoys: What the fuck did Soucek do wrong there??? 🤯

@C1919W: The bias is so blatant that these instances are just the norm now.

@monkeysponge: Not sure how Martin Atkinson gives a foul there by Soucek on Wan Bissaka. Surely looked like a foul by AWB

@OzilThings: Wan Bissaka just slid through soucek and he gave United the free kick?????

@mundy_paul: Blatant penalty. What’s the point of var if it doesn’t give that

@RedAndWhiteAlex: Only United get that decision
