VIDEO: Wolves boss Nuno calls referee Martin Atkinson ‘Rowan Atkinson’ after beating Bristol City

One of the funniest moments of the weekend came at Ashton Gate following Wolverhampton Wanderers’ win at Ashton Gate on Sunday.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was watching footage of Matt Doherty, debating with Paul Ince whether the player put his hand to the ball during the game.

However, when talking, Nuno referred referee Martin Atkinson to the actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson instead.

He said: “Nah, no that’s not a penalty for me. Rowan Atkinson took the right decision.”

“It is tough for the ref. Sometimes you give them and sometimes they don’t. I never judge them, I respect their work knowing they have the right decisions that give you the advantage. And sometimes they don’t. They do their best.”

Ince disagreed however, adding: “I think that’s a penalty, I really do.

“If you watch it closer Doherty is facing him and he turns to put his hands out. He turns and you can the diversion of the ball.”

“You need that bit of luck if you are going to win the FA Cup.”

Watch the amusing moment for yourself in the video below…

Bristol City boss Lee Johnson compared Wolves to the Harlem Globetrotters as he felt there were three handballs.

“I did think it was handball for the goal,” he said.

“I wasn’t sure whether we were playing Wolves or the Harlem Globetrotters at one point! There were three handballs. The one that (Willy) Boly received from the goalkeeper as well.

“The one that disappointed me was the goal. It was clear. Although it was a ricochet, it laid the ball perfectly into the path of (Matt) Doherty to square it into an area where we didn’t have players recovering.”
