Oldham fans accuse stewards of battering pitch invaders in the 6-0 defeat to Wigan in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday night.

Footage and photos are doing the rounds, which initially started out as a protest towards the Oldham owners, only for it to turn nasty.

Gwion Edwards helped himself to two goals as Wigan advanced into the last eight of the competition, but the game was halted for a few minutes as full time approached.

MATCH REPORT:

Leam Richardson named a full-strength Wigan line-up against an Oldham side who currently find themselves bottom of League Two and fielded several youngsters.

The defeat already seemed to be coming as soon as Tom Naylor opened the scoring on the 28th minute with a bullet header from Max Power’s corner.

Wigan doubled their lead after Power crossed for Will Keane who put the ball in the back of the net six minutes later.

The former Sunderland player smashed an effort to make it 3-0 on 36 minutes, an unstoppable free-kick from fully 35 yards.

Then Gavin Massey made it 4-0 two minutes after the restart with a cool turn and finish making easy work of Oldham.

Edwards got goals five and six within three minutes at the 65 and 68th minute mark from close to range to continue the thrashing.

Twitter users reacted as Oldham fans accuse stewards of battering pitch invaders in the 6-0 defeat to Wigan…

@Wppsreborn: Hope the Oldham lads get what they want from their protests. I know theyre going through shite at the minute, weve been there #oafc #wafc

@Mcgoo_84: Hang on, they’re chucking the wrong ones out! Should be those bellends doing the Ronaldo celebration!

@sambucawasevil: Not like @OfficialOAFC and stewards to assault kids is it DISGUSTING!!! #OAFC

@guyfoxy: I was a steward at OAFC 4many years was abused by fans and assaulted but I never reacted like these stewards have in this footage I don’t know who started this fracas but it’s so sad to see our club sink into the sewers in the English game. These stewards seem to be rent a mob.

@gav_b_1977: Abdallah, Mo, you did this.

@Y8sy: AL is a puppet hired by the three amigos to run the club into the dirt, then, when it’s gone, the three amigos who still own all the land, build hundreds of houses and make millions. Why else wouldn’t they have a proper manager in by now? No one is this incompetent! #OAFC

@rafc_ollie: Fully respect Oldham fans for all the protesting and 100% stand in solidarity with you, especially after what we’ve been through. Kind of ruined by weirdos doing the Ronaldo celebration though, just looks like you’re pitch invading for a laugh not a protest if you do that #oafc

@BradleyKnowles1: Glad I didn’t go tonight. It seems like it’s been a complete mess. Issues with stewarding, fans having details taken for having banners and told to remove, pitch invasions and a 6-0 battering #oafc

@rammylatic: One thing Oldham teams used to be known for is grit and determination, even if inferior. The yard dog fighting spirit. The Lemsagem era of recruitment is a complete shambles, not enough players have the mental attitude to try and turn the ship around. Sell the club #oafc

@LaticsPaul: We are going down anyway… take admin… get the points deducted and get these fuckers gone. Can’t see another way. No way will they sell #oafc

@RFCGW: Rent a mob on their £9.50 an hour. Scumbags

@Graham2k12bfc: Shame on stewards — I fully support all Oldham fans who are protesting (Barnsley fan)

@NorthernFaerie: That ‘security’ guy at 0:30 looks like he’s trying to throw someone over the advert board head first. Hired thugs?

@lancstic: Sympathy with Oldham fans, we know only too well about poor owners. #oafc #wafc

@AndyLeesES: Absolute shambles. Can’t be smashing him over the hoardings. He’ll get a welcome reception next game if he turns up the bald prick

@leepasq12: This is absolutely fucking disgusting.

@1rhysparsons: Clubs a right mess. 6-0 loss, mid game protest, fans kicked out snd climbing back into the stadium? And this? wow #oafc

@NewIndieSounds1: Wow! The way the Stewards react here is absolutely disgusting! Care to comment @OfficialOAFC

@theonejoeyd: the siu should be a three year ban from all grounds not just Oldham’s

@BENJSCOX: Feel for Oldham, another good club falling victim to the failures of the @EFL #oafc

@prrpleyt_: The smack at 1:12 just wasn’t needed at all 😭

@mrsyuskinson: @gmpolice just stand watching in the corner #oafc

@afitz27: Those doing the Ronaldo celebration should get a 3 year ban #oafc

@Alex_Wr1ght: State of our once proud mighty club. I despair #oafc

@alexbanham: Literally can’t pick on people their own size #oafc

@hbcjonesy1205: Some kids doing ‘Sui’ on the pitch and another is getting battered by a 40 year old bald bloke who clearly thinks he has power. What a joke of a football club 😭 let em liquidate x

@jackstringer19:
1. Those who were siuuuing should be banned for life.
2. Liquidate the club, it’s the kindest thing to do at this point.

@Caljack26: Sad seeing stuff like this happening at a club that should be higher up the table and without the off field issues…had some great memories there in previous seasons
