VIDEO: Morpeth’s Ryan Donaldson ‘assaults’ York City player Mitch Hancox in the head

Fans have been left angry as Morpeth’s Ryan Donaldson ‘assaults’ York City player Mitch Hancox in the head during the FA Trophy clash.

Highlights of the game came out, and the incident was captured on camera but conveniently left out of Morpeth’s highlights reel.

The game itself saw Mitch Hancox score a second brace in two games as the Minstermen came back from two goals down to beat their Northern Premier league opposition 3-2 in the FA Trophy fifth round.

It was an incredible comeback from City, who looked so flat in the first half and deservedly trailed to a Jack Foalle goal.

Things looked even bleaker 20 minutes after the restart when Ryan Donaldson doubled Morpeth’s lead despite York having started the second period with much more heart.

But Kurt Willoughby’s introduction put fire in the York bellies and he was immediately involved as Hancox tapped in his first five minutes after Donaldson’s goal.

Another substitute, Remy Longdon teed up Hancox for his second, before goalscorer turned provider to loop in a cross for Matty Brown to power in a header from and send City into the Trophy quarter-finals.

York City manager John Askey said his squad wouldn’t have fought back a month ago, indicating how he’s transforming the side.

“As a supporter, those are the types of game you want to watch,” Askey said.

“Obviously, going 2-0 down, none of us were thinking that.

“I was saying to the players, three or four weeks ago, I think we would have just died.

“But they showed great spirit.

“The lads who came on sort of changed the game.

“Dyson going to full-back and Ducky going to centre-half allowed us to push Akil up.

“The goal changed it when we went to 2-1 and I’m just really pleased to get a result like that from where we were.”

“I thought the first 20 minutes we played well, we should have scored two or three,” Askey said.

“Then their first effort goes in the back of the net and it becomes difficult.

“I said at half-time, ‘You have to carry on playing’.

“We started going long and playing into their hands.

“I keep telling them that when we’re at home, we’ve got to play and we’ve got to be positive.

“Games like that are going to lift players and give them more and more belief.

“(Willoughby) changed the game and with Akil going into midfield, they just changed it completely. The crowd got behind us.

“It just shows that if we put performances in like that then it’s a good stadium to be in.

“I’ve said all along, we’ve got to make the atmosphere. It showed again today that everybody will get behind us.

“We’ve got to try and do our best to make that happen.”

Twitter users took to hit out at Morpeth’s Ryan Donaldson as he ‘assaults’ York City player Mitch Hancox in the head…

@OliverCrooks1: Morpeth playing football the way it shouldn’t be played unfortunately becoming a regular sight for them

@ChipCorinthians: That’s for the police to deal with that…. No room on a football pitch for that behaviour

@GarethH04231834: Utterly shameful. Not sure if FA can retrospectively look at this, but really is no place in football for this behaviour.

@Masters1980D: If the FA don’t the police can 😳

@robinbowes: The No.10 was at it all game. Disgrace of player. No idea how he escaped a card.

@AsSowter: That number 10 should get a ban for that, blatant elbow, disgraceful.🤬

@sdsmith1981: Sadly they’ve been like that all season. Hopefully @FA will see this and take action before someone gets seriously hurt.

@iaindunn1: Absolutely shocking. No place in football for this.

@robintalkssport: That is disgraceful, he should be ashamed, after seeing that the Morpeth Manager should never play him again. #absolutelyshocking

@StuWallis: That’s a shocker that.

@walmsley_steven: That’s ridiculous.. the Morpeth player should be banned for the season. Or even charged by police .. no one should do this on a football field 😡

@elvingtonred2: Thug pub team

@Stevedunn91Dunn: What an absolute coward of a player.Should get a long ban from FA. Let’s see what @MorpethTownAFC do about this?

@JudithannShaw: There is no room for thuggery in football. Disgraceful conduct

@jav67710319: cowardly prick should receive a life ban

@marksimo67: Absolute scumbag

@Chemical_Kenz: Get him off the field!

@Ben_YCFCsankey: Missed this at the match, how vile. Had respect for the Morpeth fans travelling in their numbers but now I’m very happy they went home empty handed

@andyl86: Rotten that like!

@RealJaffa_: Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

@TheSouthernFox_: No change to how they’ve been all season then @MorpethTownAFC sort it out

@StevanoHallo: Once again Morpeth doing what Morpeth do best.

@BlythsGreenArmy: Classy bloke.

@ScottyWalden: Their players were classless against us, this isn’t surprising. Something very unlikeable about this club

@BDDunbar: Calvin Andrew got a 9* match ban for something similar. Think the Morpeth player may well end up with similar. *= Originally 12 but reduced on appeal, I think taking into account previous good record.

@brianstokes92: That’s an absolute shocker from Ryan Donaldson, hopefully a lengthy ban incoming.

@Noddy_Holder: Care to comment @RyDonaldson or will you wait for your FA disciplinary instead?
