A bizarre situation played out over the weekend after Stoke City’s Jack Butland took and scored all of his side’s penalties in a shootout.
The pre-season fixture in Germany played out to a 1-1 draw with Duisburg, before in then unexpectedly went to the spot kicks, between three players, two were keepers and one of them being the former England shot stopper.

However, he was unable to prevent his opposition’s three shots from going into the back of the net and it was all square at 3-3.
Surreal end to the game there. Finished 1-1, Stoke players warming down and it’s decided there’ll be a penalty shootout. Butland took all 3 for us then the ref knocked it on the head ????⚪️ pic.twitter.com/n3jdeMFLNw

Duisburg 1-1 Stoke (3-3 pens)
Hat trick for Jack Butland! Very odd game but can't complain for free ticket. City not so great, transport links poor and police sending us as far away from home fans as possible (even though I stood with them first half) #groundhopping pic.twitter.com/gL2R0iiwT2

Despite this, 3. Liga side Duisburg were declared the winners by the referee, leaving plenty of confusion for the person behind the Stoke Twitter account.
Six penalties, all scored, all of ours were taken by Butland but apparently Duisburg take the trophy ?♂️ #SCFC ?⚪️

Weirdly, Duisburg suggest they won the penalties 5-4 – yes, we’re confused too.
Apparently, according to fans on social media, Stoke had to leave early otherwise they would have missed their flight.

There has been plenty of interest in Jack Butland, with the Birmingham Mail reporting that he wants a move to Aston Villa this summer.
He wants to be playing Premier league football so he can keep getting picked for England matches.
Stoke want £20million for Butland, but that has put Villa off going for him.
After learning that the Stoke keeper took all the penalties but also that the German side were declared winners of a penalty shootout that finished 3-3, fans took to give their baffled reaction – find out what they had to say on the next page.
