A horrific moment for Southampton’s Che Adams as Craig Dawson boots him in the face, leaving viewers wincing when watching the game.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side went into the clash ninth in the Premier League table but just four points away from second. West Ham, meanwhile, were tenth just three points further behind.

After a hectic Christmas schedule, both sides entered their match probably satisfied to come away with a point.

That was the case for the first and second half, where they played out a drab 0-0 draw.

It’s not uncommon for a defender to leave one on the striker early in the game to unsettle them, however what took place in Tuesday night’s game between the two sides looked like a horrible accident.

West Ham defender Craig Dawson had only his eyes for the ball, but the issue was that Che Adam’s head popped up and took the powerful hit from the following kick:

It probably stopped a goal from happening, so in some way, taking a boot to the head was worth it, but it’s one he won’t forget in a hurry.

Fortunately, Adams did appear to be absolutely fine and was soon up and running. You can only hope that he didn’t suffer any concussion.

Adams remained on the pitch, his manager was watching from his home after a member of his household tested positive for Covid-19.

A club statement a few hours before kick-off read: “Southampton Football Club can confirm that Ralph Hasenhüttl will not be in the dugout for this evening’s game against West Ham United at St Mary’s Stadium.

“A member of Ralph’s household tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday (28th December), and in keeping with the club’s usual protocols and government guidance, Ralph is currently self-isolating whilst we assess the situation further.

“Ralph will manage this evening’s game from home and will remain in contact with the team and coaching staff throughout the game via a video and audio link.”

MARK LAWRENSON’S PREDICTION

Southampton were a bit subdued in their draw with Fulham, but they were missing some key men in Oriol Romeu, Jannik Vestergaard and Danny Ings.

Vestergaard is out for a while by the sounds of things and the quicker Ings is fit, the better. At least Romeu will return in midfield after his suspension though.

I was a little bit surprised by the West Ham team that David Moyes put out against Brighton, and they didn’t start well either.

The Hammers still got something out of that game, but I think they will find things a lot harder against Saints.
