A video emerges of the grim moment Newport’s Omar Bogle becomes the victim of racist gesture at Gillingham in Saturday’s League Two clash.
It came after Bogle went over towards home fans after scoring at Priestfield, but one supporter appearing to make a monkey gesture at the striker, with the County players immediately pointing out what they had just saw.
Referee Tom Reeves had talks with Bogle and captain Ryan Delaney, and then made his way over to the touchline to report the incident to the managers, fourth official and steward.

Bogle goes the other way and makes it 2-0.
Most of the RE stayed seated afterwards, they’ve learnt their lesson. Except for this guy 🤦#Gills pic.twitter.com/zK6pxXWUcK— Joseph Jameson-Rickard (@JJamesonRickard) October 28, 2023
Director of Operations at Gillingham FC tweeted, saying: “Disgusting from one individual in the Rainham End. Arrested, and a lifetime ban from Priestfield issued.
“Can’t thank the large number of fans from around the stadium who are clearly as enraged as us. We really appreciate your support. @TheGillsFC”
The game itself finished in a 2-0 victory in favour of the Exiles, Omar Bogle getting both goals from the penalty spot, on the 20th and 27th minute.
Just a month ago, Gillingham were charged by the FA and revealed a serious threat of points deductions over recent fan trouble.
The Gills have been fined by the Football Association over “vile abuse” and language “at the worst end of the spectrum”, meaning they now have to pay out £12,500 after admitting misconduct in relation to three separate crowd control incidents.
This took place over the space of two months, including racist and sexist abuse, with the League Two club making yet another warning to its supporters.

GILLINGHAM STATEMENT
A lifetime ban has been issued following an incident at Priestfield.
The club’s Director of Operations, Joe Comper, has released the below following an incident which occurred during the first-half against Newport County at Priestfield on Saturday October 28.
“I think most people will have seen the clips on social media and I just wanted to reaffirm what action we have taken and our stance on this sort of behaviour.
“One thing that people will see today from the way that we have responded, is that our stance is zero tolerance.
“We are absolutely disgusted, and we are frustrated if I’m honest.
“We have dealt with it within 30 seconds, the person involved was taken and arrested by the Police.
“Statements have been taken throughout the game and we have actually spent a lot of time dealing with that incident throughout the game to make sure that the person gets dealt with, and dealt with appropriately, that will now be handled by the Police.
“I think it is quite clear – everyone has seen the video and everyone can see what has happened. But it’s important that we, as a club, show that we take it very seriously. We dealt with it very quickly and the person was dealt with.
“One thing that I want to make a point of saying, and I think this is important to note, we put out a statement last week asking for fans to come forward and help us deal with these problems.
“The response from the majority of the Gillingham fans has been outstanding today, really outstanding.
“Whilst I’ve seen a few people state online that they are `embarrassed to be a Gillingham fan.` I understand that because of that one person but let me tell you, the number of people in this stadium, and there has been people on all three sides by the way, have come up to me.
“We have actually been struggling to deal with the number of people who are trying to tell us what happened, and that makes me proud. That makes me proud to be a Gillingham fan because the club is frustrated and are sick of it, and actually so are the majority of the fan base that are here.
“They don’t want to see it, they understand the repercussions it can have on the club. The majority of people here are as desperate to stamp it out as we are.
“So that actually makes me proud and I am thankful to the fan base.
“That was the main reason I wanted to come on and make that point. Yes, it’s not a great look for the club, I’m not happy about it and I do not want these incidents to happen. But actually, most of the people here, related to Gillingham Football Club, don’t either.
“That was shown today and that’s helped us take action, so I’m thankful to the fans.”
Fans reacted after a video emerges of the grim moment Newport’s Omar Bogle becomes a victim of the racist gesture at Gillingham…
@jordan94morris: The amount of people in the crowd laughing aswell disgusting
@Luke_Teachen: Vile this wanker doesn’t represent our fan base, life time band and to go in front of a judge. @TheGillsFC need to seriously invest in more security and hire from a different outfit as these stewards aren’t good enough also an upgrade on surveillance would help! #Gills
@TheME7Podcast: What’s it going to take? Some of our fans are an absolute disgrace, racist taunts reported to the forth official. Absolute scum of the earth, get out of our club and never return. Club need to take firm and concise action. #Gills
@PaigeLauren91: Ive never not felt safe coming to #gills but I do now feel embarrassed and disgusted coming here. In one game I’ve heard the most disgusting racist, homophobic and sexist comments. I love my club and I hate the small minded idiots that make a small minority that come here.
@nathannjb_: Between racist fans, consecutive home defeats and pathetic performances from players who should be better, I’m falling out of love with our team #Gills
@rachaelsasha: This match is ruined for me. Don’t much care about the 2 pens, all i see now is a few racist scum ‘fans’ dragging us back to the 1970s. So ashamed. #Gills
@HarveyMcKenzie1: I’m embarrassed to be a #Gills fan right now. Not because of the score. Not performance. Not actions of the club. Because of one absolutely vile cunt in the crowd who calls themselves a “fan”. Hope he gets the book thrown at him and is never allowed in any ground again.
@dave_n84: Banned for life not only for racism but that god awful jogging suit.
@dickiestarkey: Disgraceful. Disgusting. He’ll be charged, banned for life and jobless in a few days.
@WestHaminVegas: should be banned for life for that tracksuit
@rough_justice76: Lock him up. That is shocking.
@MSFage: Only one person behind him seems to have any sort of reaction to it, this is never going to stop unless people call it out.
@182AvAhmnih: This isn’t acceptable under any circumstances but footballers bring all sorts of abuse on to themselves by goading the other supporters Jamie Vardy is the best example but either this is horrendous and should be banned for life
@LSFfrb: Embarrassed at the moment to see my beloved Gills all over social media for the wrong reasons. All for passion at the football, but some “fans” are going far too far #Gills
@DadsThatTravel: Don’t let him ever in a ground ever again
@MarkyGee_DJ: My question is how can the club possibly stop these brain dead morons. I’m sure there isn’t a test for racist before you enter the ground, it’s just unfortunately inbred (literally) into some of these idiots #Gills
Green tracksuit man who gave Bogle racist abuse has been arrested and was taken away. Doesn’t look old enough to be allowed out on his own, but that’s no excuse. #gills pic.twitter.com/MdbTMgZMWG
