Chris Hughton gets ATTACKED by a fan at Ghana’s team hotel following his side’s Africa Cup of Nations defeat to Cape Verde on Sunday.
The Ghana fan was intercepted by security officials and taken away by police with the assault said to have happened when the team arrived back at the hotel.
Hughton had verbal abuse aimed at him as he faces even more pressure with the result being a second successive defeat to a minnow after Ghana lost to Comoros in November’s World Cup qualifiers.
Don’t care how disappointed you may be with the Black Stars. Attacking them at their base is simply wrong!#MaxTV | #MaxSports | #MaxOnline | #MaxAfcon2023 | #AFCON2023 pic.twitter.com/EnsyhmG7Gi

“We are incredibly, hugely disappointed with the result,” Hughton said in a press conference after the game
“We came into the game with a game plan. We changed the way of playing, the system a bit so that we could start on the front foot.
“We thought the team that were put out was certainly a more offensive team. This was our intention. I think it rocked us, the [first] goal that we conceded, but I thought we got back into the game.”
Ghana went 1-0 down with 17 minutes on the clock, despite being the much fancied side and also put out a team full of players based at European clubs.
They managed to get one back in the second half but then conceded a stoppage time strike from Garry Rodrigues.
“At that stage [when Ghana equalised] it looked like we could go on and win it – we are hugely, hugely disappointed,” the ex-Premier League and EFL manager said.
“And I know, and this group of players also know, how the Ghanaian people see this game, see this tournament and our expectations going into this one.
“Going into the Egypt game, it is a game that we need to have good results from, and that has to be the mentality. The players have to be aware of what this means and how disappointed Ghanaians are. We have no choice but to get favourable results against Egypt.
Chris Hughton, whose father came from Ghana, has been the national team’s manager since his appointment in March 2023, he helped them get to the World Cup finals in Qatar as a technical advisor.
But now there are calls for him to quit with his recording standing at four wins from 11 games.
Ghana striker Jordan Ayew said after the game: “We always lack concentration at key moments and they [Cape Verde] scored sloppy goals.
“As a team, we need to bounce back quickly. We can’t keep saying it’s a young team; we’ve been together for two years now.”
“We have two more games left, and we must stay positive. We’ll take it one game at a time and see how it goes,” he said.
This is how Twitter users reacted after Chris Hughton gets ATTACKED by a fan at Ghana’s team hotel…
@United_Leeds9: Should get a ban for life and jail if necessary
@RobPNicholson: This is how I found out Chris Hughton manages the Ghanaian national team
@stuart_jdj: Hootun out, buh!!
@Josh_And21: We not even a week into AFCON. This might be the greatest football tournament 😂😂
@frank_bannerman: Hughton’s substitutions made no sense, How do you sub off the only players making runs in attack, Semenyo and Paintsil. And proceed to sub off Ashimeru, the only midfielder doing anything
If non-professionals like us sitting back can see it how are three coaches not seeing it?
@Dom91204346: This is bad. Many of us aren’t happy with Chrisy’s exploits as Black Stars coach but doesn’t warrant attack on him. Bad.
@PCBEAgyeman1: Nah the supporter should be ashamed of himself. If Chris resigns I wouldn’t be surprised
@Notoraaay: Ah it is never this serious. Hope the coach is safe and shame on the attacker
@omaboat: This is disgraceful and shouldn’t be tolerated
@efo_seye: No matter how terrible things are this is never the way!!!!
@maurice74: My man got jumped after the shit performance 😭😭
@SamuelAyod55734: This is very bad. The fan went too far.
@SafehandsOllie: What watching Chris Hughton football will do to you
@BDMLasvegas: Attacking the coach won’t solve the problem the person should be go to jail
@adanseyy: This is just day 2 of the tournament, it’s going to be a wild one 🤣🤣🤣
@crag06: Well well well
@SirLeonP: It’s never that deep
@Anchor_Don: Chris Hughton??? The Ghanaians should’ve known they can’t win afcon with him
@ForeverOUFC: You know it’s bad when Chris Hughton is being attacked by a fan. Why would you do such a thing?! No matter the result, no one should ever have to go through something like that man come on
