VIDEO: Aubameyang sent off for malicious ankle tackle on Meyer

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended up getting sent off for his malicious ankle tackle on Max Meyer as VAR changes an initial yellow card to a red.

Aubameyang, who opened the scoring for Arsenal in the first half, caught the Crystal Palace midfielder with a late challenge after the break.

Paul Tierney dished out a yellow card but the decision was checked by VAR, which was operated by Craig Pawson back at Stockley Park.

Pawson recommended a sending off due to the lateness and severity of Aubameyang’s challenge.

Tierney then called over the Arsenal superstar before brandishing the red card.

Crystal Palace fans gasped and booed as the television screen showed Aubameyang’s tackle.

Watch the tackle for yourself below…

Minutes before that, Arsenal couldn’t deal with an incoming free-kick and were punished when Cheikhou Kouyate found Jordan Ayew whose shot deflected off David Luiz and passes over Bernd Leno and straight into the back of the net.

TWITTER REACTION TO THE TACKLE:

@nicksadler62: Blatant red. Horrible tackle

@CFCDaily: Well Done VAR ?

@SS_LFC: Correct decision. How is his ankle not broke?

@SuperKova17: Horrific tackle. Looks worse every time they replay it

@Tactical_Times: Ouch. That’s a bad one. No real malice in Aubameyang’s attempted challenge, but he has mistimed it and caught Meyer on his ankle. Looks horrendous on the replay. The midfielder is receiving treatment. I don’t think it’s deserving of a red card but VAR might see it differently.
