Victor Wanyama gets sent off 20 minutes into his Dunfermline debut in defeat to Ayr

Victor Wanyama gets sent off 20 minutes into his his Dunfermline debut which ended in a 3-0 defeat to Ayr on Saturday afternoon.

BBC Sport reported: “Victor Wanyama’s cameo for Dunfermline has just been brought abruptly to an end as he’s been shown a red card by referee Ian Sneddon. It was for pulling back Mark McKenzie who looked like he was clean in on goal.

“Actually, the ref could maybe have played on because McKenzie got back up and was clean on goal. Wanyama, 33, is trudging back towards his manager Neil Lennon who is giving him a round of applause.

“He’s been sent off on his Dunfermline debut after just a few minutes on the park.

Ayr United reclaimed second place in the Scottish Championship with a 3-0 victory over Dunfermline Athletic, marking a tough start for Neil Lennon in his first match as Dunfermline manager.

Ayr’s goals came from Connor McLennan, Jamie Murphy, and Ethan Walker, with an additional goal by Curtis Main being disallowed.

Victory saw Ayr go above Livingston on goal difference. Meanwhile, Dunfermline, lingering in 9th place, faces challenges ahead, six points above the drop zone, and six games left of the regular season to avoid relegation, and Lennon must now plan without Wanyama for an upcoming match against Livingston.

Ayr United manager Scott Brown, per BBC Sport: “We were up for the battle and the shape and the structure of the team was good. The desire was there and that’s what we’ve maybe lacked in the last couple of weeks.

“There’s a long way to go in the season. We need a lot of help as well, but we just need to keep winning as many games as we possibly can.”

Dunfermline Athletic manager Neil Lennon: “I’m disappointed with our lack of goal threat, our lack of belief and quality in the final third. That’s something we have to improve on as that’s five games out of six in which we haven’t scored.

“I know we’ve got a mountain of work to do but that’s why I’m here. There’s a fragility at the minute that we need to change.

“Victor (Wanyama) is in there with his head down. We knew he would be rusty but we wanted to give him some minutes. He slipped, didn’t he? You can tell he needs work.”

Lennon – who was himself booked for his protests – said, per Glasgow Times: “Victor slipped, and his initial reaction was to reach out for it, but I thought we had Jeremiah there. I don’t think their guy would’ve been clean through.

“Listen, I’m not happy with the referee. I got booked for apparently contesting a decision where my player got flattened, and their guy remonstrates with the ref and still doesn’t get a card. It was a very strange performance from him.

On being denied a penalty claim, with Connor Young was seemingly tripped inside the box: “Connor is about to pull the trigger, he gets tapped. Everyone is telling me there’s definitely contact. There’s no fourth official to have a go at, so the linesman is the nearest one in my eyeline!”

Lennon on Wanyama: “I knew Victor was rusty. He needs to get minutes into his legs as quickly as possible. Now he’ll have to do it with a lot of conditioning work and training with the squad and be ready for next week, hopefully.”

Twitter users reacted as Victor Wanyama gets sent off 20 minutes into his Dunfermline debut in a 3-0 defeat to Ayr…

@Gmouthmilan2023: Red card yes but that’s a shambles to not play on😂

@gcgjags: Definitely a red, he’s shooting and 1 on 1 with keeper until he punches it towards the other defender who is then brought into play. Definitely a clear opportunity

@Pickle67: I’m sorry but what is Victor doing? 🤣🤣

@GordonAUFC: One of the most enjoyable 20 mins as an Ayr fan I’ve seen

@dufcway: Aye definitely a red card. What’s he doing there 😭

@TheBhoysPage: You cannot tell me he didn’t mean it 😂

@sfc_jack_: 😭😭 sounds about right

@LouisePage_: Take the boy out of Tottenham…

@M_CeItic: scottish football never fails to impress 😂😂😂😂😂😂

@ChrisTa05603934: Most poetic red card I’ve ever seen 😂

@BaileyWelsh5:
Ahh good old Scottish football
Please never change
Not the best debut for wanyama but certainly one to never be forgotten

@AliWalker_95: Wanyama’s done himself a favor getting sent off cos now no one is taking about how unfit and shit he was when he come on. No danger he’ll manage a full 90 mins before the end of the season
