Valerien Ismael calls for VAR in the Championship after Blackburn’s 3-0 defeat to Ipswich

Valerien Ismael calls for VAR in the Championship after Blackburn’s 3-0 defeat to Ipswich on Saturday afternoon.

It was a comfortable 3-0 win for Ipswich, which also puts more pressure on Valerien Ismael and his Blackburn side.

A straightforward showing from Ipswich, who were pretty much gifted two goals inside 12 minutes. An own goal from Eiran Cashin just 3 minutes in, the only man in the six-yard box and somehow slides it into his own net.

Then it was 2-0, an unmarked Dara O’Shea at the back post nodded it down, Balazs Toth produced a saved, the ball went loose and Jack Taylor netted from a yard out.

Early in the second half, Marcelino Nunez tested Balazs Toth with an acrobatic volley, only for the keeper to beat away. He then had to keep out Jack Clarke’s attempt.

Blackburn had a huge chance early in the second half, when a huge appeal for a penalty was ignored by the referee.

Mathias Jorgensen paid the ball across for Yuki Ohashi, but was brought down by Darnell Furlong. Ohashi fumed at not being awarded what he and his side thought was a clear penalty.

Rovers continued in their attempts to try and halve the deficit, Moussa Baradji on the edge of the box, but his effort went wide.

Tom Atcheson blocked Jack Clarke’s volley with Balazs Toth then saving Marcelino Nunez’s rebound with his legs to prevent the hosts from going three up.

Another penalty appeal was turned down by referee Andrew Kitchen, this time when Eiran Cashin went in on Ivan Azon with a challenge from behind.

Then on 88 minutes, Ipswich wrapped it up, 3-0. It was Jens Cajuste who played it to Wes Burns, who then saw a low cross turned in at the back post by Szmodics.

Ismael said, per East Anglian Daily Times: “I think that the two goals in the first half just killed the momentum and everything in a difficult away game.

“We tried in the second half. I think it’s another clear penalty on Yuki. I think at some point the ref has to do a job. It’s another big decision. If we score a penalty it’s 2-1 and game on. There’s a clear red card on Toddy.

“We urgently need VAR in the Championship. If you know VAR is there then you won’t have situations like that. It’s just embarrassing. Week-in, week-out, massive decisions (go against us) – penalty, not a penalty.

“That doesn’t change the first half when we concede the two goals, but in a 90 minute game it could have changed momentum and help us get back in it.”

With his side now three points above the drop zone, IsmaĆ«l added: “Look, at the minute we are trying to find ourselves. We’ve lost another player to injury, Liam Miller, so are playing without 10 players. We need to stay calm, to ride the storm and wait for players to come back.”

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk:

It was nice to get the early goals. It puts you in a great position in the game and from there we were always comfortable.

Blackburn played their part and didn’t give up on the game so it kept it competitive but we also know we could have killed the game off a lot earlier with the third goal. It didn’t come until the end but it came in a nice way when it did. There were lots of positives to take.

It would have been nice to have had a more relaxing view of the second half if we had been able to get the goal earlier but I didn’t think it was for the want of doing the right things.

We have goals in the group and in the squad.

On Ipswich’s injuries:

Jaden [Philogene] felt something in his knee. Chuba [Akpom] has hurt his groin so we are assessing that but he won’t be available for the next couple of matches.

Kasey [McAteer] had some muscle tightness during the week so he wasn’t available today but hopefully he won’t be too long.

Twitter users gave their reaction as Valerien Ismael calls for VAR in the Championship after Blackburn’s 3-0 defeat to Ipswich…

@73renny: Works both ways, we should have had a penalty too šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

@ReportRovers: It took them 15 years to demolish & destroy anything good about this club. I always thought no matter what I’d Never let Venkys take Blackburn Rovers away from me.. but very slowly and surely they are.. the hope & passion is dying. They need to go, we need our club back.

@Djhughesy93: What about the blatent pen for town 🤣 this cunt is the gift that keeps giving

@liamharding96: Does he just whinge about everything?? your side are absolutely shite mate, stop blaming every other factor

@andyneilX: there is so much to say about the current position the club and team finds itself in and I don’t even know where to start, but what I do believe is that if by some miracle we do manage to stay up this season, I only see it as a stay of execution 😐 #rovers āš½ļøāšŖļøšŸ”µšŸŒ¹

@RoversFor: Club statement needed. Starting with ” the club has today decided to part ways with Ismael and Gestede with immediate effect”. Unpopular opinion maybe but they ARE on par with Steve Kean , infact maybe they are worse. Club stinks at the moment

@RoryLarmer: Forget the talk about boycotts and division. Valerian Ismael is completely out of his depth, which he has proved at basically every job since Barnsley. Every result cant’ be the consequence of injuries. There is no identity at all with this group. What are they even trying to do? Jack Walker always said ā€œThink Bigā€. This could not be any further from that.

@Rory_ISP: VAR won’t solve you having 0 shots on target though. Knob.

@tombury89: When you defend like that & concede 2 early on you deserve to get beat but Andrew Kitchen has had a shocker today he got all big calls wrong (both teams) & it can’t carry on these poor performance from referees week in week out #rovers #itfc

@KDeller138: Is there more than a moaning manager in the championship. Never ends with him 3-0

@mrscaldie: I am absolutely not spoiling for a fight, or trying to be divisive. But if you can’t understand what @BRFCCoalition is fighting for after that performance, turn off the lights at Ewood now. I am heartbroken at the state of my club. We need change. #Rovers #VenkysOut

@scottmason256: Woeful performance. We look tired and totally lacking ideas. VI is far down the list of problems at this club but he has to take some responsibility for that performance. Starting hendriksson again shows he has no tactical flexibility and no clue how to turn things around.
