Update given with South Shields fans involved in crash as minibus overturns on A1

An update has been given with South Shields fans involved in a crash as a minibus overturns on the A1 on their way back home from a game.

The incident, which came a few hours after South Shields’ 3-2 National League North defeat away at Tamworth, has led to an outpouring of support and well wishes from the football community, including many clubs too.

@SouthShieldsFC wrote: “Our thoughts go out to the supporters involved in a crash on the way home from today’s game. At this moment of time we have no further details, however we hope everyone is safe and recovering. 💜🩵”

But posts on the South Shields Football Club – All Things Mariners Facebook group explained what happened and how the group of fans are doing.

Stu Rounthwaite wrote: “Forget about the result today, all our thoughts at ATM are with the supporters mini-bus involved in a serious accident today on the way home. Hope to God everyone is okay and that all involved are safe. Info is very limited so we know as much as the next – all we can do is pass on our positive thoughts and best wishes to all involved.”

Simon Kelsey said: “Just got back home from Wakefield hospital where 8 of our friends were taken after the accident. One has been admitted and has asked me to post this with a fractured sternum and broken ribs and I’ll be heading back to see him later today. Thank you to the people who came down from shields to take some of the discharged home ❤️”

National Highways said that there had been a ‘serious collision’ on Saturday evening involving an overturned vehicle which closed the A1 near Darrington in Yorkshire.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson added that there were numerous people on board the minibus and confirmed 15 people had been injured and taken to different hospitals in the area.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service meanwhile said: “We responded to the incident with a wide range of resources and 17 patients were taken to hospitals in the region.”

The road was closed in both directions, before the southbound carriageway reopened with tailbacks reaching several miles, despite diversion routes being put in place.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service called and then stood down a major incident and said its services were under “extreme pressure” because of the crash. No fatalities have been reported.

Dean Knight who was on boad, posted on Facebook: “What can I say or where shell start with this I am absolutely speechless and don’t know what to say with amount of calls, texts, messages, even from people I don’t even know that support different football clubs wishing us all a speedy recovery, over the last 24 hours my phone has constantly been going off all night and sounding like an alarm clock, there is loads of people I need to thank but first I need to thank qualify first aid Gareth Bright who was the first on the scene after the crash and help me from the wreckage and looked after me as I was in a state of shock and saved my life.

“Second I need to thank the Ambulance, Fire Bridge, and Yorkshire Police who put their lives on the line to save us, also a huge shout out to the amazing staff here at Pinderfields hospital in Wakefield who have worked their socks off to get me and other people that was in the crash on the road to recovery.

“Third to every single non league football fan from the National League system even though I don’t know them that has took time of their day to message me and wish me and others a speedy recovery it’s things like this that brings non league football and family closer together.
“Forth Simon Kelsey Massive shout out to Simon and his other half for going above and beyond what they did, but when it’s your own football family we would all do everything we could to make sure people are safe and well ❤️🟣🔵
“THANK YOU EVERYONE!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
“I don’t know when I will be discharged from hospital and coming home yet but I will let you all know.

“Oh and check this out what a difference 24 hours can be from being in a bus crash to recovering. 👇👇
