Update given on Wes Fogden after serious injury abandons FA Trophy tie

An update has been given on Wes Fogden after a serious injury abandons the FA Trophy First Round tie at the weekend.

The Dorchester Town player/coach suffered a neck injury in the first half of the match at Basingstoke Town FC on Saturday.

Fogden was conscious and talking when taken to hospital; scans confirmed two fractured vertebrae, requiring weeks in a neck collar.

The game was abandoned and will be replayed on Tuesday, both clubs have issued a club statement.

Basingstoke Town said: “The @DorchTownFC has now been safely transported into the ambulance. A big thank you to @MccarthySeanagh for her knowledge and professionalism in helping deal with situation. A nice moment as ‘Stoke fans made their way back outside to clap the player off the pitch.

“We’d like to place on record our thanks to our supporters for their classy reaction to yesterday’s unfortunate event.

“In the immediacy of the moment it would have been easy to make light of what was happening before the full picture was clear. Instead, you showed respect, empathy and patience for the injured player.

“The fact our fans returned to the touchline an hour later to applaud him as he was taken from the pitch summed it up perfectly.

“We’re yet to receive an update on the player but we’re sending our best and hoping for a smooth, full and speedy recovery.

“Pleased to hear the latest on Wes, while it’s a serious injury, we’re relieved to know he’s in excellent hands.

“A huge credit to our Head of Medical, @MccarthySeanagh, for her outstanding professionalism.

“Seanagh is brilliant every week, but in moments like this, you really see just how exceptional she is.

Twitter users reacted after an update given on Wes Fogden after a serious injury abandons the FA Trophy tie…

@CharCraner: Thoughts are with Wes Fogden, superb footballer and a top guy♥️

@steve_the_tank: As a basingstoke fan I would like to wish Wes all the best and a very speedy recovery, regardless of who you support no one likes to see that, was happy to lead the applause as Wes was finally escorted from the pitch. Best wishes. At the end of the day result doesn’t matter every player should never expect to leave the game in an ambulance. Best wishes to Wes and hope makes a full and speedy recovery, happy to exit the bar to applaude him being transported by the medical team. Well done to all who helped.

@PMcness36427: Best wishes to the player concerned, a great reaction from Seanagh and the fan reaction which was a credit to the club and non-league football. Best wishes from a Kidderminster Harriers fan

@HerminesRouges: Best wishes to Wes for a full and speedy recovery. I was exasperated by the time it took to get an ambulance to the ground (the hospital is 1-2 miles as the crow flies from the ground) and even then, it was merely a paramedic, rather than an ambulance that arrived 1hr later.)

@GuyN72: Wishing Foggy a speedy recovery. ❤️‍🩹

@Jeremygtay: So sorry to hear this. Wishing you a very speedy and full recovery Wes 🙏

@danfloyd1993: Think Wes got a knee to the head and didn’t land well (ref played on) seemed conscious but didn’t move for an hour. Absolute shitshow from the officials. Managers shook hands after half hour and seemed to be off then was back on. They didn’t have a clue what the protocols were

@InsolvencyMatt: Speedy recovery Wes 🙏

@chrisrumbelow1: #afcb thoughts with you Wes and hope for a positive recovery
