Update given on Greg Olley after horror tackle sees Woking v Gateshead stopped for an hour

An update has been given on Greg Olley after a shocking horror tackle sees Woking v Gateshead stopped for an hour on Saturday afternoon.

In the 15th minute, Dion Kelly-Evans took out Olley out with a horrific challenge from behind and was shown a straight red card.

Olley received instant medical attention, but the stretcher was called for immediately with both teams making their way back to the dressing rooms temporarily, while Olley continued to receive on-field attention.

At 3:32pm, the referee took the decision to suspend the National League fixture for a further 30 minutes, while Olley received medical attention.

At 3:57pm, Greg was taken away in an ambulance to a standing ovation from both sets of supporters.

The game restarted from the 16th minute at 4:15pm, with Olley replaced by Worman and Tinkler replaced by Belehouan.

National League clash between Gateshead and Woking was suspended as one player was transported to hospital

Woking tweeted: “Everyone at Woking Football Club wishes Greg Olley a speedy recovery 🙏

“Two ambulances have entered the field of play and Olley has been transferred into one of the vehicles. Once again, we wish him a full recovery.”

Gateshead said in a statement a few hours after the game: “Greg Olley is now in a stable condition, and will undergo surgery on Sunday morning after suffering a broken leg during today’s game.

“All at Gateshead FC would like to thank both the medical staff in attendance for their professionalism in quickly dealing with the medical emergency concerning greg, and those at Woking FC for their care and concern in the immediate aftermath.

“We would also like to acknowledge the immense team effort from players, staff and supporters after the decision was taken for play to resume, in what has been a difficult afternoon for all associated with Gateshead FC.”

Reporter Mark Carruthers tweeted: Been asked to pass on a message from Greg Olley by his Dad.

Greg is in good spirits and wanted to let @gatesheadfc supporters know he is thankful for the messages already being sent his way.

As @ha11nno said, everyone is with Greg right now and throughout what lies ahead.

Gateshead issued a further update on Monday: “Greg Olley has come through surgery without further complications, following a Lengthy operation to repair a broken Fibula, stabilise the Tibula and Fibula, and a full repair of an Ankle Syndesmosis.

“Regrettably, he faces a Lengthy period of rehabilitation and we will continue to support Greg and his family to ensure he can return fit and healthy.

“Although no time frame will be placed on this, we can concede that we will sadly not see him lead the team on the pitch again during the 2024/25 season.

All at Gateshead FC wouLd Like to place on record our sincere gratitude to the staff at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, and for the many well wishes that have flooded the club.”

Gateshead boss Rob Elliot said: “What we do know is that he’s in the right place.”

“He’s gone to hospital and we’ll just have to see what the situation is, we’ll have to assess that as we go.

“We’re into unknown territory here with everything, so we just have to get around Greg to make sure he’s ok and give him the best support.

“The first thing is that Frazer Bell and the doctor and physio at Woking were fantastic in getting him organised, and making sure after a lengthy spell that Greg was in a comfortable place.

“I’m absolutely gutted and devastated because there’s no need for it to be in that situation.

“We just have to make sure that we’re there for Greggy, support him and take it from there.

“Greggy wanted us to play the game and carry on. It was more the lads that dictated it, I was quite distressed and I wanted to call the game off.

“The lads and Greggy made the right decision, and I thought we went about the game really well, but it’s kind of hard to talk about the football after that to be honest.

“We did what we needed to do. Becky [Mark Beck] showed that different element that we have in terms of putting threat into the box, and it was just a case of wearing them down and being professional and making sure we didn’t slip up.

“We’ve got to learn with Becky that just because he’s on the pitch, we don’t need to be direct.

“We need to get into the right areas for him to be effective in terms of our crossing, and he’s obviously a very good footballer in terms of his link up play and the way he moves the ball.

“We’ve got a lot of different options in the forward areas, and for any problem we can always try and find a solution between us all.

“I definitely saw an evolution in the team and the squad – I’m as pleased as I possibly can be given the circumstances.”

Twitter users wished Greg all the best in recovery with an update given on how he’s doing after the horror tackle sees Woking v Gateshead stopped for an hour…

@MattyMadden88: Speedy recovery Greg, heart shattering when you see anything like this. Hope your back asap 🙏

@xanaduflipper: Best wishes for a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹🖤🤍

@MalcolmJG70: We’ve got Olley, super Greg Olley. Speedy recovery Captain

@BessemerBen: Hoping everything goes smoothly for Greg and the recovery is as pain free as possible.

@Chrell83: You’re made of tough stuff @gregolley7 positive thoughts and you’ll be back before you know it!!

@DDDFootball: A 3 match ban doesn’t justify that tackle. It’s like an assault. What an absolute coward of a man. The FA should at least ban him for the same amount of time Greg is injured for, but in all fairness the bloke should never be allowed to step foot on the pitch again.

@WillDSey: tinkler 👏👏 dion was known as “no-nonsense” when he was at notts, but there is absolutely no need for that only 12 mins in. hope olley makes a full and speedy recovery. must be devastating for his teammates.

@Thomas9Eddie: Speedy recovery @gregolley7

@NeilDodds2: Hope all goes well with the op @gregolley7 and hope you have a speedy recovery. We will miss you skipper

@bradbarr_: mate that’s horrific. 100% need to enfronce longer bans for tackles like this

@JamesChrister4: Absolutely gutted. Greg more than likely out for the rest of the season and the kid that done it will get a 3 game ban. Tinks is a Propa teammate aswell mind, didn’t leave his side

@Alex_Footman: Awful challenge fucking hell

@S_Jupp_: The more I see this the more it pisses me off. Horrendous to say the least, no intent to play the ball, only to cause damage. Worst thing is he’ll no doubt be back playing in 3-5 weeks, doesn’t do it justice. Utter cunt

@Stezza_Dozza: Just seen the tackle on @GatesheadFC‘s Greg Olley from this afternoon. Fucking vile. For tackles like that, players should be banned for the length of the injury they’ve caused. Hope he’s ok. Looked hideous.
