Update given on fan taken ill in medical emergency with Wycombe v Wrexham halted for 50 minutes

An update has been given on a fan taken ill in a medical emergency with Wycombe v Wrexham being halted for 50 minutes on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson dedicated the Welsh outfit’s 1-0 victory to his side’s supporters after a fan was taken to hospital during the contest.

The League One match had been goalless by the 77 minute, when referee Ben Speedie stopped proceedings due to the medical emergency in the away section at Adams Park.

Wycombe were set to take a corner, but a after a section of Wrexham fans, as well as a handful in the Family Stand, alerted the officials of an incident with a spectator in the away stand collapsing and needed urgent medical care.

Bucks Free Press report that stewards used a number of Wycombe flags as a barrier as the fan in question received treatment.

Play was stopped for more than half an hour with medics treating the fan, and Wrexham have since confirmed the supporter was in a “stable condition” prior to being taken to hospital.

Having left the field while the fan received medical attention, players then came back out for a 10-minute warm-up before play resumed.

The result mean that Wrexham climbed above Wycombe into second in League One, although the Chairboys have a game in hand.

Wrexham boss Parkinson revealed after the match that his players discussed the supporter in the dressing room after the game has been delayed.

“Our thoughts are with him and his family,” Parkinson said.

“We’ve been told he’s in a stable condition and that’s the most important news. It’s terrible when something like that happens and football pales into insignificance.

“It was only when we found out that he was in a stable on his way to hospital that both sets of players wanted to come out and continue the game.

“We spoke about it in the dressing room that there was going to be another 20 minutes to play. Could we be the team that started the best and do it for our supporters. That’s what we spoke about, and the lads certainly did that.”

WREXHAM STATEMENT:

Wrexham AFC can confirm the supporter who suffered a medical emergency at the match against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday is now recovering in hospital.

The match was halted in the 77th minute to allow medical staff and the emergency services to deal with the incident in the away end.

The supporter was breathing, conscious and in a stable condition when taken to hospital by ambulance, and is now recovering following further emergency treatment.

All at Wrexham AFC would like to send the supporter our very best wishes for their recovery.

We would also like to place on record our thanks to the medics and staff for their swift actions, and to all at Wycombe Wanderers for their response to the incident and for their clear communications throughout.

Wrexham’s Hollywood co-owner Ryan McElhenney posted on Twitter: “We are all so proud of the lads and their massive win.

“But our hearts go out to our supporter who was rushed to the hospital. Wishing them the the best of recoveries. Up the town.”

Following their loss to Wrexham, Wycombe wrote on Twitter: “Our thoughts and best wishes are with the Wrexham supporter who was taken ill during today’s game.

“We wish him all the best for his recovery.”

Wycombe boss Mike Dodds said to BBC Three Counties Radio: “On behalf of anyone associated with the football club, we wish him well.

“The positive we have been told he is in a stable condition and sometimes when that happens, it puts life and stresses into perspective.

“We wish him and his family well.”
