Two ex-EFL footballers due to appear in court after being separately charged

Two ex-EFL footballers Kevin van Veen and Shaun Rooney are due to appear in court after being separately charged, as per reports.

Kevin van Veen and Shaun Rooney, who both were connected with Scottish Premiership club St Mirren, are scheduled for court appearances due to separate charges. He didn’t appear in the St Mirren squad for the game against Rangers on Sunday due to injury.

Kevin van Veen faces allegations of domestic abuse, accused of engaging in behaviour that was abusive towards his partner or ex-partner.

The St Mirren striker, who signed a season-long loan deal with the club in August, was due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Thursday morning.

The Scottish Sun write that the 33 year old is alleged to have carried out a catalogue of incidents at addresses in Cancun, Mexico, Lanarkshire, Inverclyde, and Renfrewshire.

He appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court charged under domestic abuse laws, making no plea in the brief hearing with the case to continue until the 28th of November by Sheriff Michael Higgins.

Prosecutors claim that van Veen shouted, used profane language, made threats of violence, and directed offensive comments towards the woman, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, from September 2021 to July of this year.

It’s alleged that he forcibly removed her clothing and underwear, exposing her body without her consent.

He’s also accused of making her stay standing naked during their disputes.

Legal documents suggest that he look at her mobile phone and social media interactions.

Van Veen also faces further allegations of physically restraining her and pushing her off a bed when she was pregnant, while also repeatedly disrupted her sleep and had shown up at the residences of her family, refusing to leave when told to.

He reportedly insisted that the woman went to his residence and to have persistently called and texted both her and her family.

He is accused of confining her within his home and of removing her sanitary products from a waste bin to display them to others.

Shaun Rooney, on the other hand, has been charged with assaulting an 18-year-old woman, having been arrested in September 2024. He was also charged with breach of the peace involving an 18-year-old male during the incident.

Following these charges, Rooney was suspended by St Mirren, and his future with the club became uncertain after an investigation into the incident.

A spokesperson for the force said: “A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an assault on an 18-year-old woman and a breach of the peace against an 18-year-old man in takeaway premises on Queen Street, Glasgow, in the early hours of Thursday, 19 September.

“He was released on an undertaking to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.”

A short statement from the Scottish Premiership club states that they would make “no further comment” on the matter.

Manager Stephen Robinson did address the impact of Rooney’s departure, saying: “It leaves us slightly short but we will be fine.

“Shaun is obviously a very good player and he is a loss to any team, but we’ve got a lot of competition in that position. It’s a chance for somebody else to really take it by the scruff of the neck.

“It’s not been a shock and something sudden with him leaving. It’s been four or five weeks and we’ve got a massive squad there and everyone’s very together.”

In a pre-match press conference on Tuesday, St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson said the last few weeks had been his most challenging time as a manager.

His side ended a run of four straight defeats by coming from behind to beat St Johnstone 3-1 on Wednesday.

He said: “It’s been a really challenging period both on and off the pitch for the club, with some things we’ve had to deal with internally. It’s been a huge challenge but everyone stuck together.

“I think from start to finish we were excellent. It followed on from the performance on Sunday. We were back to what we are.

“We should have won by more tonight, we had a goal disallowed. The character we showed, when we’ve been on a losing run, was excellent.

“After relative success last season, you try to evolve and we had a lot more possession of the ball in areas that did not hurt teams. We probably signed players to play like that as well but the reality is we were not very good at it.

“We play like St Mirren and we are right up against people. We play forward and we play in their half of the pitch. It brings energy to the stadium and that’s how we play going forward.

“Personally as a manager it’s been very challenging. We’ve had decisions go against us. A lot of things have dictated what team we put out.

“We’re back in our system now and we never lost belief.”
