Trouble at Birmingham v Shrewsbury after fans clash with police making arrests

There was trouble at Birmingham v Shrewsbury on Saturday afternoon after fans clash with police making a number of arrests.

A number of videos have surfaced recording what was happening in the stand, the concourse and outside St Andrew’s stadium.

Birmingham, the runaway leaders, moved closer to automatic promotion with a dominant victory over Shrewsbury in Michael Appleton’s first match as Shrewsbury’s manager.

The game was largely one-sided, with Birmingham creating numerous chances. But it was Ben Davies who opened the scoring in the 27th minute from a Dowell free-kick, putting Birmingham ahead.

Ethan Laird doubled the advantage in the 61st minute, heading in a cross from Marc Leonard, then substitute Alfie May scored twice late in the game, first tapping in Emil Hansson’s cross in the 77th minute and rounding Blackman in the 86th minute after a through ball from Louis Harris.

Shrewsbury managed a late consolation goal through substitute Vadaine Oliver, their only effort of the match.

Shrewsbury boss Michael Appleton said, per Shropshire Star: “I think in the first half, there were two or three players who almost struggled with the occasion.

“Possibly looked a little bit too big of a game for them, which could happen, and I was aware that might happen, given the circumstances.

“Obviously the run that Birmingham are on at home and the run that we as a club were on was eight games without a win. Now, it’s nine games without a win. I was aware that it could be a very, very difficult afternoon.

“All I would say is that to be fair, I think there was certainly a fair amount of them showing a lot of spirit in that second half and were brave enough to take the ball in areas that they’ve probably not taken the ball in recent times. I’m going to keep asking them to do that because I think it’s the right thing to do.

“That is from a club point of view, from an individual point of view and a development point of view.”

Birmingham’s Chris Davies: “It was a good performance,” said Davies, who celebrated his 50th game in charge of the club.

“We were strong throughout and dominant is the word I would use to describe it.

“We had a lot of possession, but we were dangerous with it, and we were quick and aggressive when we didn’t have the ball.

“I thought we were going to score before we did, but to score from a set piece was really pleasing.

“We could have added to it but at half time it was a case of continue, don’t get comfortable in the game, keep the intensity and speed in what we are doing.

“We looked like we had a bit of freshness back as well, so it was a really good win.

“We’ve had many games where we have been very strong and we’ve maybe had a one goal margin and it’s got really tense towards the end, so we have to make it count.

“The atmosphere was great, the fans were enjoying it, and it was a really nice day for us.”
