Tottenham fans mock Man City with Pep Guardiola frustrated by 2-0 defeat and Trafford blunder

Tottenham fans took opportunity to mock Man City with Pep Guardiola left frustrated by his side’s 2-0 defeat and a James Trafford blunder.

Spurs made it back-to-back Premier League wins under new manager Thomas Frank with a brilliant performance at the Etihad.

Tottenham left their fans buzzing, singing “It’s happened again!” after watching their side also beat City last November with a 4-0 defeat.

After a number of chances for both sides, Rayan Ait-Nouri had to be replaced by Nathan Ake on 23 minutes after going down injured.

In the half hour mark, Tottenham boss Thomas Frank slapped his head on the touchline after Brennan Johnson was booked for tapping the ball away after Manchester City was awarded a free-kick.

Just after that, a break from Spurs ended with Richarlison playing the ball to Brennan Johnson, who placed it into the back of the City net, it was immediately ruled out by an offside flag, then overturned by VAR after a check.

Before half time, there was a collision between James Trafford and Mohammed Kudus, then a howler from the Manchester City goalkeeper, when he tried to pass it out from the back, only for Richarlison to pounce on it, the ball rolled into the path of Joao Palhinha, with a deflected attempt ending up in the net to double Tottenham’s lead.

Phil Foden couldn’t keep a straight face as Tottenham fans sing about being “champions of Europe”.

In the second half, Manchester City came close, Tottenham just about clearing it. Alarm bells set off as Rayan Cherki looked ready to strike.

Tottenham were back on the attack, looking for a third, a delivery sent into the box by Pedro Porro but Richarlison couldn’t finish, Rico Lewis with some good defending too.

Another big chance followed, only for Brennan Johnson to waste it, an attempt gone way out

30 minutes left of the game, and Spurs failed wit an eighth attempt, Richarlison’s header from Pedro Porro’s free-kick ended up on the roof of the net. Then Richarlison saw another header go wide.

As Man City pushed for a goal, Cristian Romero was booked for a foul on Oscar Bobb.

Ruben Dias came close, and Rico Lewis put an attempt over the bar, Richarlison getting frustrated, pushing and shoving, risking undoing all that hard work and that impressive display.

Then came that likely yellow for Richarlison, booked, and then subbed off.

As the game was coming to an end, City fans were seen making their way out of the Etihad, with those in the away end singing: “It’s happened again, Manchester City, it’s happened again.”

Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson, speaking to TNT Sports: “Really pleased. I thought we played really well today, and we built on what we did last weekend. To come here get a clean sheet and score some goals – perfect.”

On big changes between Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank: “Nothing massively. Two different coaches. Really enjoying it and a lot of detail goes into the set-pieces, but at the same time he gives us a lot of attacking freedom.

“The first few games we have kept two clean sheets and against Man City it is not easy. I have played here a lot of times and conceded a lot of goals.”

Tottenham midfielder Joao Palhinha, speaking to TNT Sports about his decision to move to Spurs: “First of all, the coach [Thomas Frank] who pushed me to come here and showed me the project he has here at Tottenham.

“It is such a great club, and I am really glad to be in the Premier League again.

“I am so happy, me and my family. Now I want to enjoy this top club and top atmosphere again.”

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias, speaking to TNT Sports: “Spurs are a team who can be very dangerous, they started the game very well. We didn’t react the best way in sticking to our game. The second goal is unfortunate, it cannot happen. We chased but there was a lot of things to do better. Not everything was good in our first game and not everything is bad now so we have to get back to work.”

Disappointing defeat in front of home fans? “Frustrating, we want to win even more at home in front of our fans in our first home game. It is what it is, it’s football we look forward.”

On signing a new contract with the club: “It says about our ambition, it says that we want to stay here and win trophies and that’s the mentality of the club, nothing has changed.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: “I had a feeling the performance was a little bit better than the result. Individually our simple things with the ball were missing. They scored the second at the end of the first half. We have to play in a different way to the way we usually play. The result is not good but there is a long, long way [to go] and we will learn from that.”

Difficult against Spurs: “It happens a lot with Spurs, they punish us always in that position. I’m not going to say Spurs are better with Thomas [Frank] or better with Ange [Postecoglou]. Spurs have always been a good team and last season they were and this season they are again.”

On Ait-Nouri’s injury: “I don’t know, I didn’t speak with the doctors yet.”

On having enough players: “We have to have enough players to play every three. four days in this demanding league.”

On facing Brighton next: “We have seven days so we will recover, analyse and talk. We will find the right balance.”

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, speaking to TNT Sports: “I think this is one of the most difficult places to go to in the Premier League. They came with everything and I think before our goal and them dominating us, they were more on top of the game.

“We stayed in it. We were solid and had a top mentality.

“After the first goal, more or less we were the better side.

“I found a strong mentality in the players. A group of players who had been through a tough season and ended on a high. Great mentality in many ways and then we had to build on that.

“On our goal kicks we tried to play out and that was quite successful at times, but the big thing is how we press from a goal kick – we go man to man and that is big for me.”

On Richarlison: “Again, Richy performed well today. Work ethic, and everything was very good about it. We need two good strikers – we’re going to play a lot of games. Richy is now starting, he just needs to keep his shirt.”

Twitter users gave their reaction asTottenham fans mock Man City with Pep Guardiola frustrated by the 2-0 defeat and that James Trafford blunder…

@TottenhamTiers: Thomas Frank showing you exactly what he’s capable of… NOW BACK HIM.

@GaryRWard: Outstanding performance. Great physicality in the tackles, & collectiveness together all over the pitch. The press as a team is outstanding. Thomas Frank has understood what we want as a fan base, is incredibly adaptable & is delivering inside 3 games. What a coach !!

@BennyBoyTips: Thomas Frank will win you trophies if you back him. It’s that Simple.

@SpursShirt: Alot of negatives during the week towards the board and rightfully so, however, credit where its due to Thomas and the group! Class…….. so far, but I do worry about our depth. #BackThomas #welldone #coys

@paulfrewDUP: Master class from Spurs at Man City. They must really hate us ! Maybe best if they just post us the three points from now on?

@samcthfc: Had a feeling we’d win today GET IN 🤍

@richiecoys: Get the fuck in! Not that this result is out of the ordinary for us but usually we’d have lost to Burnley last week.

@TimZTimmyZ: Thomas Frank and Spurs just went to Man City and absolutely dominated them. Masterclass.
