Top six favourites to become new Southampton manager as owners consider Nathan Jones’ future

The top six favourites to become new Southampton manager is revealed as the owners consider Nathan Jones’ future at the club.

The Athletic reports that Southampton’s owners, Dragan Solak of Sport Republic are currently reviewing his comments.

Rasmus Ankersen, co-founder of the club, brought Jones to the club. He remained in his chair as the players left the tunnel. After every match, Jones and Ankersen usually have a debrief.

According to reports, Jones’ comments have upset senior club players who also disagree with his claim that “there weren’t many more than me” during his time at Luton.

Southampton fans sang ‘get out of our club’ and ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ – referencing the decision to substitute Romeo Lavia – towards Jones during the defeat at Brentford.

Several senior players are described to be unhappy with the former Luton boss, especially after is post-match interview got everyone talking.

ā€œI’ve compromised,ā€ he said. ā€œI’ve compromised in terms of certain principles because of one, personnel, but two, the way that people want to play and so on.

ā€œI’ve compromised because of fans, and so on, a few little things but – no more. I’ve been very successful playing a fluent style, Luton were a real aggressive front-footed side.

ā€œStatistically, there weren’t many better than me around Europe in terms of aggression, clean sheets, defending the box, balls in the box, xG, all those sort of things.

ā€œWe were pound-for-pound the best because we were spending next to nothing and producing so much. And I’ve gone away from that.

ā€œMaybe it’s because of the Premier League or how things look – players, internationals and stuff like that. I’ve had to compromise certain things and I’m not going to do that again.ā€

The club’s owners have spent around Ā£60million in the January transfer window to try and help the manager turn their season around and save them from relegation.

However they now sit three points from safety, and fans can’t see how they will avoid the drop this season. Southampton’s will take on Wolves at home next Saturday, with away trips to Chelsea and Leeds after that.

This is what fans said with top six favourites to become new Southampton manager revealed as owners consider Nathan Jones’ future…

@superleeds69: Break the bank and get Jessie Marsch in

@TrickyLMC: They can’t sack the best manager in Europe surely 🄓

@jonesy68: It’s a horrible phrase’ he’s lost the dressing room’ but if the senior players are unhappy then it’s going to be very difficult for him.Players must remember they are playing for themselves, the fans and the club aswell as the manager.

@Maccydoon: We need Jones and Marsch to stay to give us a chance of staying up!

@lional2936: He’s doing a great job, keep him till the end of the season please šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

@DayPaul84: Well it’s up there with worst PL appointments of all time. So hardly a surprise

@laithgaribaldi: He’s doing a great job, a top top European coach with fantastic xG. Give him all the time he needs to implement his methods #saintsfc #nffc

@danieledmunds4: He’s doing a fantastic job leave him alone

@alright__dave: They recruited the most Championship manager available, what do they expect?

@Rees_wba: Think his appointment was always going to end up like this.

@wil_pompey: Give him until the end of the season, please! I beg šŸ™šŸ»

@SaintRob__: Gallardo has to be the man.

@SimpsonsNffc: I think they should stick by him

@Gibbo8: He’s doing a great job, proving he’s the best in Europe. Don’t sack him #saints

@halftimepies: A huge risk #saintsfc getting rid of statistically the greatest manager in Europe surely? He’s doing a superb job btw, for every other side in the bottom half that is!

@Frankbl91: Remember when Nathan jones said he was one of the best managers in Europe because he managed Luton town which never made it to the prem šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚. Back to the championship you go mate

@JudeLondon: Good, squeaky self loving failure. Sooner rather than later though @SouthamptonFC

@TractorSaint: Not enough room for his ego in that cab though.. #saintsfc

@MarcTR4: The only good thing to come out of the NJ debacle, is that the fanbase has truly come together again. #SaintsFC

@FPLDisasterClas: Gallardo x Alcarez the boy wonder šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ Might not happen, but I’d love that

@alexg_sfc: Not sure why everyone’s so negative, our manager is statistically one of the best in Europe! We’ll be grand, just stop giving opinions as you’re compromising him and not allowing him to play his style of football, or whatever the excuse is next week. #SaintsFC

@Liam_Houghton98: What could they possibly be reviewing? What is Ankerson clinging onto? Everyone in the entire footballing world can see that Jones has to go. What are we waiting for? The Wolves game at the weekend is a write off with him in charge. @SouthamptonFC get on with it! #saintsfc

@FlynnJonas2: Just looking at the list of free agent managers out there, and to be honest there are some good names….. The problem though is in all honesty who is going to want to come into this mess?? I get some will say we are an attractive option, but right now the #SaintsFC job is not

@philrandall: TBH I feel sorry for Nathan Jones. It was a crazy appointment. Shame on the owners at Southampton that they couldn’t see someone like Jones would very likely struggle to deal with the demands & pressures of the Premier League. Hope he finds his level again & does well. #saintsfc

@nathanjonesout2: It’s time to say a mistake was made in appointing him and get him out today. His post-match comments were deeply concerning, and he shouldn’t survive another game. It was a risk that hasn’t paid off, and the cup victories and Everton have only covered up the cracks. #SaintsFC

@topfivedancer: Surely his comments are even more sackable than the results? He’s told the world, including the squad, that the job is too big for him.

@ChrisAuckland: Not sure why Jones would be given another critical game when he’s already lost one. I think his post-match comments make his position completely untenable regardless of whether he could have turned things around #SaintsFC
