Tommy Conway cons referee into awarding a penalty with spectacular dive in win over Rotherham

Fans were left baffled after Tommy Conway cons the referee into awarding a penalty with a spectacular dive in his side’s win over Rotherham.

Tommy Conway was cheekily offered a snorkel by fans on social media for his diving theatrics against Rotherham United.

The Robins were playing host to already-relegated Rotherham in their final home Championship game of the season on Saturday (April 27) with both sides having anything to play for at Ashton Gate.

But despite that, it didn’t stop Tommy Conway conning the referee into awarding him a spot kick, which he then stepped up for scored to put his side ahead.

He threw flung himself to the ground, despite there seeming to be limited contact if any from Rotherham goalkeeper Dillon Phillips.

Tommy Conway was then crowned their young player of the season in the post-match awards by the supporters.

ā€œTheir support doesn’t go unnoticed, and I know what playing for this football club means to the fans,” he told the club site. ā€œI try and give back every week and every minute that I’m on the pitch so to get that recognition from them, I’m delighted.”

Conway is also being tipped with a multi-million pound with the likes of Celtic and Rangers keen on him, with his penalty being his 12th goal of the season in all competitions.

Millers boss Steve Evans said: “I praised the boys with their efforts. There’s a lot of learning that I’m doing in this period of time. I think the performance was workmanlike. There were lots of energy and lots of industry but they were far the better side today.

ā€œThere were a couple of key moments in the first half. Tom (Eaves) went through and should have done better than hit the goalkeeper.

ā€œI’m also really disappointed with the referee’s decision over the penalty. That gives them a lot of momentum and makes the boys a bit nervy not to concede three or four goals.

ā€œI feel for the supporters who have travelled all this way and had to watch performances like that all season. There’s a lot of positives but we’ll see more in the summer.

ā€œThere’s a lot of learning that I’m doing in this period of time. We will continue to learn for the next 7-10 days and then I’ll make my recommendations to the Chairman and the Boardā€

Ā Evans told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“They got a penalty for what looks like a dive. I think the boy (Conway) has just overrun the ball.

“That first goal gives them a lot of momentum and probably makes our boys nervy not to concede three or four goals, which has probably been semi-normal.

“I thought the performance was very workmanlike. We showed lots of energy and industry. But they were by far the better side.

“I’m really disappointed with the referee’s decision to give the penalty in the first half, but we understand we were a long way second today. It’s not a close second – we were a long way second.

“I’ve praised the boys for their efforts. There’s lots of learning that I’m going through at this period in time.”

Bristol City head coach Liam Manning told BBC Radio Bristol:

“I thought it was a solid performance from start to finish. We had control and created really good chances. I’m delighted to get the win and clean sheet.

“We set the players a challenge going into the final eight games – really pushing to build momentum for next season and trying to develop some strong habits. You’re starting to see that come out.

“It’s about making sure that every time we turn up, we’re at our maximum and you can really see the group are growing and moving forward.

“We’ll finish higher than last season with more points. The bit we’re chasing is consistency.

“In the summer we need to add the right ones and it hopefully allows us to progress next season.”

This is how fans reacted after Tommy Conway cons the referee into awarding a penalty with a spectacular dive in his side’s win over Rotherham…

@ieuan_teague: Imagine doing that to a team that’s already relegated šŸ˜‚

@39heros: From a different angle you could see a sniper in the crowd taking a shot at him ffs

@wildy79: Ref wants sacking and the player needs a ban and brandishing a cheat.

@NickyBrown_1983: Just another to add to the shit we’ve had. We have been wank enough without decisions like this going against us.

@adawri81: @FA_PGMOL please award him an Oscar for this top class acting.

@AWas29: Another stinker. At least he was in the box when he threw himself down though..

@paul_stani: That’s horrific reffing once again šŸ˜‚šŸ¤¢

@TwatRUFC: Week in week out #rufc

@wainwrightmj: Laughable. What a joke these refs are #EFL @FA_PGMOL

@tommyuto: That’s disgusting. Genuinely mental how bad refs have been towards Rotherham this season.

@TheTivoliEnd: Ref v Leeds didn’t want to disallow the handball goal because it wasn’t fair to guess. But here the ref cannot see the ā€œcontactā€ from his angle. So he’s given it on a guess. So much for consistency. #rufc

@ccama15: Probably get a load of stick for this but this is piss poor from Conway. If one of their players had done this we’d be going mental yet very few say a word. The game is worse for this shit #BristolCity

@Rufcjoe87:
Hi @EFL can you explain why your officials are either
1. Corrupt
2. Incompetent.
Fuck your apologies just get some decent, honest refs. #rufc

@DannyClarry: Just another to add to the list of poor referee decisions to go against us, it’s ok though we’ll just get an apology

@a_stxx: Imagine blatantly cheating against an already relegated Rotherham side who haven’t won away in nearly 18 months when your team has nothing to play for. šŸ˜‚

@nmtfish: “Your luck evens out over a season….” Like fuck it does! Rufc had some god awful refs over the years, but this season seems the worst ever. ‘Handballs’ outside the box,opposition scoring with the elbow, 2 apologies from Howard Webb for sending offs & today’s dive for a penalty.

@ClaretShirts: Why don’t the FA ban players after they do stuff like this? It simple, ban them for a few games and this shit will stop

@wc1867: How the fuck have Rotherham had so many disgusting decisions go against them? #rufc

@__IrufcI__: Surely this is a ban upon review?? #rufc

@kevjohnson77: I’m sure we will have some shockers in L1 too but…… This is half n a dozen, maybe double figures of shocking, biased decisions. I admit we’ve been shite and deserve the drop but come on šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜… #rufc

@Zee80Thompson: Oh my gawd !!! Never a penalty 😔 #rufc #bcfc

@abs_rufc: it’s a good job we sent ourselves down this season or decisions like this and the WBA etc. would be really fecking annoying, at least now they’re just laughable 🤣

@The_RUFC: Ahahahaha. Thank fuck we’re out of this league next season, it’s so so boring. Can’t wait for Evans to build a team that won’t stand for this shite #RUFC

@s64millersdad: An absolute f**king disgrace yet again from another bent referee. @FA_PGMOL how many more apologies do Rotherham United need?

@jonathandveal83: Rotherham have been the worst team in the Championship this season. They’ve also, undoubtedly, had the worst refereeing. Look at this absolutely disgusting decision
