Three players called up as two depart England squad

Three players have been called up to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers as two depart from England squad, as confirmed on Tuesday.

James Ward-Prowse has replaced Kalvin Phillips in the England squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers after the Leeds midfielder withdrew through injury.

He will join up with the squad at St George’s Park on Tuesday as they get ready to face Andorra away on the 9th of October followed by Hungary at Wembley Stadium three days later.

James Ward-Prowse has been added to the England squad to replace the injured Kalvin Phillips.

The Southampton midfielder was part of a 24-man group that assembled at St. George’s Park on Tuesday.

Phillips was assessed following Leeds United’s victory over Watford on Saturday and has been ruled out of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Tammy Abraham and Ben Chilwell were added to the squad yesterday following the withdrawal of Reece James.

The Three Lions face Andorra away on Saturday 9 October (7.45pm kick-off) before hosting Hungary at Wembley Stadium connected by EE on Tuesday 12 October (7.45pm kick-off).

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has been added to Lee Carsley’s MU21 squad in place of Josh Griffiths.

Rushworth, who is on loan at Walsall from Brighton & Hove Albion, has previously been involved at MU19 and MU20 level.

Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate has spoken to Callum Hudson-Odoi about his international ambition in an attempt to avoid a Three Lions stand-off with the Chelsea winger, who looks set to switch his allegiance to Ghana next year.

Hudson-Odoi rejected a call-up to England’s Under-21s at the end of August and was not included in the latest squad for the games against Slovenia and Andorra.

Hudson-Odoi, who earned a Chelsea first-team recall against Southampton at the weekend, sees himself as a senior player, having made three appearances for manager Southgate’s full England team.

Hudson-Odoi would be eligible to switch his international allegiance to Ghana from November next year in time for the World Cup in Qatar.

Despite making three senior England appearances, FIFA rules would allow Hudson-Odoi to change countries, however Southgate refuses to allow that threat to affect his selections.

If Hudson-Odoi played in one more competitive match for England, then he would not be able to change countries but there is currently no sign of that happening.

Southgate is understood to have been in discussions with the Premier League player, who is also unlikely to back down in his belief that he has progressed beyond playing Under-21 international football.

The situation has resulted in a fear around the England camp and FA that Hudson-Odoi will accept an invitation to play for Ghana when he is eligible.

Hudson-Odoi started in his favoured left-sided attacking position against Southampton, but he was substituted in the 65th minute with Chelsea drawing before the home team went on to collect all three points.

The academy graduate has also filled in at right wing-back under Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who, in August, made it clear that he believed playing for England’s Under-21s may be of benefit to Hudson-Odoi.

“It’s his personal decision and nothing to do with my opinion or the club’s,” said Tuchel. “If I speculate a little bit, I think it’s about disappointment that he is not nominated for the first team, but at the same time maybe did not have enough minutes to be nominated for the first team.

“Personally, I could see the upgrade in having some minutes and being in a leading role for the Under-21s, but he decided differently so he will deal with the consequences.”
