Thomas Tuchel criticises ‘silent’ England fans in post-match interview after beating Wales 3-0

Thomas Tuchel criticises ‘silent’ England fans in his post-match interview after beating Wales 3-0 in a friendly on Thursday night.

England saw off Wales with a first-half goal rush at Wembley, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Bukayo Saka all finding the net inside 20 minutes.

But it seems the Three Lions boss was ‘a little underwhelmed’ and disappointed by the support from home crowd throughout the game.

England boss Thomas Tuchel tells ITV1:Ā “The stadium was silent. We never got any energy back from the fans. Yeah (I was expecting more from Wembley tonight). If you just hear Wales fans…it’s a bit sad. The team deserved big support today.”

Tuchel, speaking to ITV:Ā “We had one and a half training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we did very well. We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get any energy back from the stands. We did everything to win.

On whether he expected more from the fans:Ā “Yes. What more can you give in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the team deserved more support today.

On Morgan Rogers:Ā “He is what he is. He is a number 10 and he is competing for his place. He is in a good way.

“We are ready for any team effort. Serbia was the next example of teamwork. We created a lot of chances. We could use Harry all the time, but we need to play without Harry and Jude – the guys are injured. I think we played an excellent first half.”

Tuchel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:Ā “I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than being 3-0 in a derby. I would have wished for a bit more support in phases where it gets difficult. In the second half to get behind us, there was a bit too much support for Wales.

“It could have helped us to regain energy, but it is what it is and that is it.”

Tuchel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on Rice, Anderson and Rogers: “First of all they’re very good players and they love to play with each other. Declan is on an extraordinary level at club and international level.

“Really outstanding, the intelligence, the work ethic and the volume Declan puts into every game is just outstanding.

“Morgan and Elliot are humble players and very talented and that is a very good mix.”

Tuchel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:Ā “We only had one and a half days to prepare against a complicated opponent. To shut them down in the way we shut them down demands a lot of effort.

“The team bought into these ideas, and they made the effort for each other. So I am very pleased with the performance. We should have score more in the in the first half. We could have scored in the second half, but we didn’t.

“They had a lot of changes, and we had a lot of changes, and it cost us a little bit with the rhythm, but overall, the next step in the right direction.

“We now have a day off, and we will enjoy the feeling. The players truly know what they put into the game for it to look like that.”

On starting fast:Ā “The spirit, the mindset is right, so they love to play this kind of football. It is a brave approach, and it takes a lot of effort, but they are happy to do that.

“We are nearly playing like a club team – very flexible, but staying true to our structure. Everyone buys into their role and is ready to do invisible work and help each other. I am very happy with the next step.”

Morgan Rogers, speaking to ITV about where his first England goal ranks:Ā “Right at the top. It’s a proud moment to do it at home too in a home nation derby. A dream come true.

“The quality of players we have with people here and not here, you can never be too comfortable, or else people will take your role.”

Rogers, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:Ā “Not a bad night, that’s for sure.

“The way we came out of the traps, on the front foot and I think we were really good. We wanted to continue from the last camp and build on it. Maybe in the second half we dropped off, but ultimately it is about winning games and getting a rhythm and that’s what we’re doing.

“Different team, but the same ideas and the same mindset. The players that come in or don’t come in we know what we’re doing. It is a lovely environment to be and it is very nice to be in this team.”

On scoring his first England goal:Ā “Not much to be honest! It hit my foot and deflected in. The feeling when it hit the back of the net was a lovely feeling. Eight caps too long, but it is nice to get one and hopefully many more.

“I was making sure I get that goal, making sure I’m a threat to the opposition and to get that goal is really lovely.”

On being part of Thomas Tuchel’s team:Ā “It a nice feeling. When he came in it was a fresh slate for everyone.

“There is probably 40-50 players showing what they’re about, and it is a privilege to be here. I want to maintain my performances here and at the club. That’s ultimately what I want to do.

“You see his credentials. He has come in here, and he has ideas of playing and to be able to fit into that is a nice feeling.”

“Difficult to sleep after games, but I’ll have to try!”

England’s Bukayo Saka, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:Ā “It has been a while since I put the ball in the back of the net in an England shirt. It makes it even sweeter.”

On cutting inside and shooting:Ā “It is natural to me and something I have done for a while. I try to keep the defender guessing. You have to change it up, so they don’t know when to expect it.”

On the team spirit:Ā “I feel like a team with a lot of spirit. I can see what the manager is building. You can see the healthy competition he is creating. Every time we train and play, everyone gives their best.

“We are building something good, and it is exciting to be part of it. I feel we’re progressing and going in the right direction under him.”

Twitter users reacted as Thomas Tuchel criticises ‘silent’ England fans in his post-match interview after beating Wales 3-0…

@bella__mela: Thursday night in October at Wembley where tickets are extortionate without travel, drink and food a couple of weeks after the last break, against Wales in a game that means nothing when most people are skint and already following their club up and down the country every week…

@ABitOfPork: Maybe tell your bosses to reduce the average ticket prices from £50, so normal fans can attend rather than the sterile middle class family demographic they have been cultivating for years. Or maybe play some games outside of London? Or maybe even play some exciting football?

@KayLFC05_:
When in London – Stamford Bridge/The Den
Down South – Fratton Park
Up North – Villa Park/Old Trafford/St James’ Park
Then save Wembley for ā€˜glamour ties’ and tournaments.
The new Wembley is soulless.

@Martin_Buhagiar: Absolute idiot. Thursday night, tickets mainly between £60 and £80. Maybe supporters who were there were thinking about the two hour queue for the tube they have to look forward to after the game between 10pm and midnight. Football and broadcasters will reap what they sow.

@PhilTheRocker1: Pointless break.. pausing the Premier League for a meaningless friendly.. I’m amazed that so many people turned up at all.. may as well have gone home after 20 minutes, Tuchel should be grateful people actually paid money to watch the borefest that followed

@JayCoyle301: Friendlies away from Wembley. Qualifiers at Wembley. Problem solved šŸ‘

@utvHarry: 1. Don’t play games at Wembley, the stadium is shocking for atmosphere – use villa park, st James, Everton. 2. Play better teams in friendlies, no one wants to see us play wales – people want to see Brazil, Argentina etc 3. Cap tickets at Ā£25 – you’d of packed it out tonight.

@jamie_castle96: He’s spot on. Wembley’s an incredible for stadium for club football and concerts, but for England it’s dead. I only go because I have to to get the away tickets. About time the FA took England on the road.

@Daveypeo88: Englands atmosphere at Wembley has always been horrific especially the new Wembley and compared to other European clubs. Move the England games around the country and wait for the difference in atmosphere!

@fusionjosh_: Expecting a big atmosphere on a Thursday night vs Wales in a friendly? Come on 🤣

@MouseKingSteven: The international break is dull. Beside the tournaments nobody cares. So half the crowd are just families going for a one off experience. Everyone is fuming there’s no prem football this weekend and more fuming that England play on Thursday at 7:45pm

@JimmyDRFC: Football is becoming such a laborious chore at the top-level. Light-shows, half-time DJ sets, over-priced tickets, tourists taking over etc. – it’s crap. A fair amount of the most ardent fans have turned their backs – mainly down to costs – and plenty more will continue to follow

@andy_cov93: Get it louder so the FA hear it. We don’t want every single game at Wembley it’s boring.

@DCFCChristopher: Stop playing at @wembleystadium then. It’s shite for the National side

@Spireiteswrite: Anyone getting offended at this has clearly not been to an England game at Wembley in recent years. He’s spot on, that atmosphere is absolutely turgid

@PompeyPedro: It was a friendly v Wales on a Wednesday night in October. He needs to relax.

@JamieWhite95552: Start playing games away from London and the problems solved

@cian_paris: He’s not wrong, Wembley attracts a different crowd to the usual due to being in London. The Welsh fans were miles better than us tonight, especially when they sung their national anthem and that’s the fact. Surely worth taking it around the country a lot more
