Tempers flare after Dan Neil sees red before Sunderland get thrashed by Middlesbrough

Tempers flare at half time after Dan Neil sees red before Sunderland get thrashed by Middlesbrough in quite the Tees–Wear derby.

Then Sunderland’s Dan Neil received the game’s first card for a lunge on Josh Coburn as the pair challenged for a loose Jobe Bellingham pass.

The first major talking point came right at the end of the first half, with Sunderland going down to 10 men.

Dan Neil left absolutely furious at getting his second yellow card with replays suggesting he said something to referee Jarred Gillett. It was soon revealed that Neil used an expletive in the referee’s direction when a foul was given against Sunderland and was shown a second yellow as a result.

Then as the whistle blew at the Stadium of Light, both sides’ players clashed, with Matt Crooks jumping in and take Josh Coburn out of the it.

Coburn and Dan Ballard were booked for getting involved.

Then in came the goals, with the first of four on the 58th minute as Sunderland couldn’t get the corner away.

Fry found himself on the left wing, he delivered to the front post where Sam Greenwood produced a clinical finish.

Boro added a second within two minutes of their first, with Isaiah Jones bursting down the right, got the better of Jack Clarke, ran to the byline and squared for Matt Crooks, who sidefooted the ball home.

On 73 minutes, Middlesbrough grabbed a third with 17 minutes of the 90 remaining, thanks to Isaiah Jones collecting on the right, went forward, then cut inside his man to make it 3-0.

There was still time for a fourth for the away side, Emmanuel Latte Lath smashing his shot into the palms of Anthony Patterson, only for the ball to bounce in the direction of Marcus Forss, making no mistake in scoring.

Quite the turnaround in form for Carrick and his side as they start to climb the Championship table.

Twitter users reacted as tempers flare after Dan Neil sees red before Sunderland get thrashed by Middlesbrough…

@clay_hazel23381: Well when you’ve already been booked it’s really not a good idea to walk up to the referee shouting your head off, is it? Dunno why all the mackems are moaning. Greenwood also been booked for dissent.

@Fantanafest73: Ref has had a shocker today so far. Persistent fouling by Boro and especially Crooks who is still on the pitch. One of the worst sendings off I’ve seen. Shocking

@NOTjoshpeters: Refs in the English league are hands down the worst in the world #SUNMID

@Lewis_Palfrey22: Pathetic to send off a player for dissent in a big game like but Dan Neil shouldn’t be on the pitch anyways for nearly breaking Coburn’s leg at knee height

@J_swfc1867: Shock another awful referee ruining a match. He’s one of them where the power of being a referee just goes to his head

@alexwillis_2k: Referees will make mistakes – as we all do – but the one thing I find utterly unforgivable is bookings/sendings off for dissent… we all love football because of the passion… drop the ego and get on with the game ffs! Go and ref rugby if you don’t like people shouting at you!

@MushyPeaTipper: What a fucking joke ref ruining the game for the cameras

@PhiliusBoro: Crooksy keeping Josh out of trouble 😍 #UTB

@KRissetto: Never before have refs had so much power but the standard of officiating is so poor.

@haymansafc: Meanwhile Crooks persistent fouling to prevent attacks goes unpunished… 🤔 #SAFC #SUNMID

@1892Ben: verbally abusing our refs after all the hard work they do. vile, disgusting, 5 match ban needed

@Liam_AFCB: Jarred Gillet. What a cock. How this man is still employed in England is beyond me, Send him back to ange porkycoglu land where no sod has to watch his shit referring performances

@sjrcarson: English refs to go one week without causing some kind of drama challeng

@atm1927: Would really love refs to be mic’d up like you hear in the rugby. Interesting when they analyse the decision to see why it was given etc. Even that VAR nonsense with Liverpool. At least you could see where the mistake was made, rather than totally being in the dark.

@Burgawolf: Gillett strikes again. Did this to lemina at Southampton last season

@chlcrk: Needs a zoomed-in camera and a lip reader to see if he said something harsh enough that it warranted a second yellow and the red. But this looks like it’s escalated a bit quickly

@Doy9509: Fancy giving it the big’en on a yellow the silly mong

@AFCBMackie; Refereeing fuck up from Jarred Gillet for the millionth time what an absolute knob can’t stand him one bit. Decisions he’s made against us is even worse #afcb
