Respect has been paid to Sven-Goran Eriksson as he reveals in an interview that he’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The former England manager, 75, told Swedish radio station P1 that he has around a year at most to live after he fainted on a 5k run. Prior to that he had been in a good state of health.
Eriksson, who was England’s first foreign manager between 2001 to 2006, stepped down from his most recent role as sporting director at Swedish outfit Karlstad just under a year ago due to health issues.
🗣️ Sven-Goran Eriksson: “Everyone understands I have an illness that’s serious. Everyone is guessing it’s cancer, and it is. But I’m going to resist for as long as I can.”
We’re all with you, Sven. Keep fighting 🙏 pic.twitter.com/v2ZGnClRAQ

Sven-Goran Eriksson has "best case a year" to live after a cancer diagnosis.

He told Swedish Radio P1: “Everyone can see that I have a disease that’s not good, and everyone supposes that it’s cancer, and it is. But I have to fight it as long as possible.
“I know that in the best case it’s about a year, in the worst case even less. Or in the best case I suppose even longer. I don’t think the doctors I have can be totally sure, they can’t put a day on it.
“It’s better not to think about it. You have to trick your brain. I could go around thinking about that all the time and sit at home and be miserable and think I’m unlucky and so on.
“It’s easy to end up in that position. But no, see the positive sides of things and don’t bury yourself in setbacks, because this is the biggest setback of them all of course.
“I was fully healthy and then I collapsed and fainted and ended up at the hospital. And it turned out that I had cancer. The day before I had been out running five kilometres.
“It just came from nothing. And that makes you shocked.
“I’m not in any major pain. But I’ve been diagnosed with a disease that you can slow down but you cannot operate. So it is what it is.”

The football world paid respect as Sven-Goran Eriksson reveals he’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer…
@garethlealand: So sad to read this. Great man gave me so many good memories with England.
@henrywinter: My thoughts with Sven-Goran Eriksson who has cancer. Sven tells Swedish radio station P1 he has “maybe at best a year” to live. One of life’s great characters, good coach and great company. I spent a day at Sven’s house in Sweden once, talking over the highs and lows of his England reign and he was incredibly hospitable, open and fun. Always feels England could have won Euro 2004 had Rooney not got injured. In occasional conversations since, he always wants to know how his old England players are doing. Loves talking about them. Gerrard, Beckham, Rooney. Sven cares for them. You could see why players love him. Wonderful man. My thoughts with Sven and his family.
@sumsECFC: Sad news. Enjoyed watching England under Sven back in the day. A gentleman of the game who sadly got stung by the MSM. Thoughts with him and his family.
@bobafett26: Awful news. One of the nicest and smartest men in football. Spent an evening chatting with him in a Manchester Hotel once – along with Ant & Dec which was a bit surreal. Lovely guy, talks passionately and bought a round too! Stay strong Sven.
@CraigDonovan_:Terrible news to read this morning. Sending thoughts to Sven and his family and friends. Watching England when Sven was manager was an exciting time, and the first World Cup I vividly remember.
@wealeyGK: Sad to hear of the news about Sven. So fortunate to have been managed by him, a breath of fresh air to English football. He taught us all respect, calmness, composure and clarity of thought. Before every game Sven would always say “lastly respect the referee.” Rest up Sven
@Richbow79: This is terrible news. I will always remember beating Germany 5-1 in their own backyard and the less talked about revenge win over Argentina in the World Cup
@fatbury: Sad to hear – one of my fave England bosses
@FoxyN77: Sad news about Sven. Always seemed like a top bloke and very capable manager too. Some great times as England coach. Hope he is able to enjoy the time he has left.
@dominic_trout: Very sad about Sven-Goran Eriksson. Horrible news. Hope he can fight the good fight.
@MartCAFC45: Unbelievably sad news about Sven Goran Eriksson . Gave England fans their best ever time following England away with that 5-1 win Munich
@Elliottkinsella: Awful news coming out on the news this morning about Sven, superb manager who brought some fantastic memories to me growing up as a kid loving football. Hope he can kick on and enjoy the rest of his life.
@THLCFC: Wishing Sven-Göran Eriksson all the best. You have the entirety of leicester supporting you. Fuck cancer!
@PNEste25: Aww no not Sven. Probably my favourite England manager in my lifetime 🙏
@Andymac5856821: Damn that’s horrible . All best Sven. It’s horribly sad but this way he has year to plan things , maybe do things he wants to do and leave messages etc with family members etc
@dangloag: Very sad news about Sven 🙁🙁 Hope he manages to have a comfortable last year or so as possible ❤️

This is really sad. Through his time with England, City and when I spoke to him in China, Sven was unfailingly polite and engaging company. I hope he makes the best of the time he has left. https://t.co/uF4v9I8UJv

Some sad news this morning.
Former Manchester City & England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has been diagnosed with cancer.
He’s told Swedish media that ‘best case’ he has a year to live.
He managed the national side 2001-2006 before a season at City in 2007/8. #ManCity

One of Sven’s finest moments – the 5-1 v Germany. At City, he’ll be remembered as a man who lifted the mood from the Stuart Pearce droll. 8-1 won’t be forgotten but won’t define everything else he brought – in fact, fans even look back on that result fondly as Sven was in charge.
