Surprise name approached by Birmingham for manager’s job

There is a surprise name approached by Birmingham City for the manager’s job, and it is a big one, with the vacancy up for grabs come the end of the season.

Spanish boss Pep Clotet has already confirmed that he will be departing St Andrews after the remaining eight games have been completed.

There has been plenty of speculation over who may be taking over at the Midlands club with so many linked, including the likes of Chris Hughton, Nigel Clough and Lee Bowyer all being mentioned.

Neil Warnock was also one of those among the favourites to get the job, before heading to the Riverside Stadium to replace Jonathan Woodgate earlier this week.

Well according to reports on Thursday, The Blues are looking at making an audacious move for former Liverpool player turned Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

He has been manager of the Scottish giants since 2018 and is set to oversee his third season in charge with the club.

Website Football Insider stated that Birmingham, asked Gerrard, who is 33/1 for the job according to Sky Bet, if he was interested about taking over this summer.

They cite a ‘Birmingham source’ as telling them they are interested in the Rangers manager succeeding Clotet.

They also claim Gerrard has declined the opportunity, instead choosing to remain at Ibrox and oversee his third campaign at Rangers.

After retiring in 2016 he then went into coaching with the Liverpool academy before getting the chance to prove himself in May 2018.

He is yet to win a trophy for Rangers, however his achievement will be narrowing the gap on Old Firm rivals Celtic, as they hope they can stopped Neil Lennon’s side from winning an historic tenth title in a row.

He signed a new contract last December to remain with them until at least the summer of 2024.

There were rumours in May 2020, that Gerrard was considering his future at the club.

However the ex-England internation came out and revealed has no intention of leaving Rangers in the “near future” unless the Ibrox club sacks him.

Gerrard, who has amitions to become Liverpool boss one day, told The Times: “If people think I am going to leave Rangers in the near future because it is my decision, and I don’t want to be there, then that opinion is wrong.

“In terms of me being proud and happy to be the manager, and wanting to move the club forward and improve it, then I am all in. It was always going to be a job where I had to learn on the go.

“Now, I never for one moment thought I was going to get everything right and everything was going to be positive.

“I knew the team and squad situation when I took over. I knew the pressure and the demands of the fans.

While the Gerrard era has seen Rangers make steady progress in many areas the Scouser is well aware that he’s a man learning on the job.

“I knew walking into the job what I was taking on but if you are asking me the question, ‘Am I a better manager for the two-year experience and are Rangers in a better position now to what they were?’ then my answer is yes.

“We are trying to move and upset something that has been successful for a long time. I think you have to realise, and appreciate, where Rangers were.

“It takes time to get it back to when they were successful and had incredible managers like Graeme Souness and Walter Smith.

“It was always going to take time to get back. I see a lot of progress. I see us getting better but I appreciate that at Rangers eventually you have to win. You can’t be nearly.

“I am the type of person, as you know, who will wear my heart on my sleeve and that is probably an area where I need to be better at and be a bit more balanced after games.”

Fans reacted after the surprise name was approached by Birmingham for the manager’s job…

@PepsBarmyArmy: Hahaha I said from the very start Steven Gerrard would be brilliant, hes done a great job at Rangers IMO he wouldnt end up as another Zola…..#BCFC

@conorkeane21: I really don’t know how I’d feel if we were to somehow appoint Steven Gerrard… #bcfc

@boomasylum99: STEVIE G? PLS #bcfc

Nicholas Wellsbury: Good manager Steven Gerrard

Luke Vaughan: He could still play for us and be the best player in the championship lol

Marc Aspery: At least we’re thinking bigger than Nigel Clough…hopefully

Steve Lewis: Why not ? We’ve had great managers and got rid so anyone will bloody do!

Tony Timms: Would it mean we basically become Liverpool reserves? Might not be a bad thing

@BcfcMichael: Attracting Gerrard away from European football is not going to happen. He might come to England the year after but probably wants one more go in Scotland. Should be looking at Hughton/Jokanovic and giving the terms they want. That shows ambition to….
