Surprise new favourite emerges for Wigan’s managerial job, but fans give a rather divided reaction to the current speculation.
Duncan Ferguson is reportedly in pole position to be the new Wigan Athletic boss, sources have told Football Insider.
The 50-year-old is said to be keen to land his first job as first team manager rather than the usual interim / caretaker position we tend to see him in in recent years, after leaving Everton in the summer.

He has had talks with the Championship outfit, who got rid of Leam Richardson earlier this month, and is being considered by the club as they close in on a new appointment.
An agreement isn’t yet in place but Ferguson is currently the favourite for the post.
Leam was axed last week just over two weeks after signing a new three-year contract with the club falling into the relegation zone.
Richardson had guided the Latics to the League One title last campaign in his first season in charge.
The managerless side picked up a defeat for the mid-season World Cup break with a 2-1 victory over near-neighbours Blackpool on Saturday (12 November).
Wigan are now inside the drop zone on goal difference ahead of the return to second-tier action on the 10th of December.
Duncan Ferguson, who had two spells as the Toffees’ interim manager, most recently taking charge when Rafael Benitez, was relieved of his duties in January this year.
If he does take the job, he would be his first permanent job in management after holding several positions at senior and academy level.
He left the Merseyside outfit in July, claiming he was ready to “take the next step” in his career and was subsequently linked with the Blackburn job over the off-season.
Wigan have the second-worst goal difference in the second tier after scoring just 21 goals in 21 second tier games this term.

As mentioned, a surprise new favourite emerges for Wigan’s managerial job, fans give a divided reaction to it though…
@lewburgess11: I’d take him me especially if baines is no.2 why not?
@WillLatics71: The most Wigan thing ever 🙄🙄 #wafc
@__BadaBing: Shit and piss
@GallenLeung: The only reason I can think of is his link with Everton and the quality of their youth players that we can loan. Maybe they think there is another Mount/Elliott that can help us. Not judging him till I see him but that’s the only reason I see him better than Leam
@laticsfan1985: Who cares who the manager is, budget… has to be discussed with the owner and talal so if not agreed then they wont come, anyone who agrees on a budget and can get effort out of that lot for a full 90 mins has my backing! #wafc
@CoreyBissell_16: Gimme Gerrard and bring Ben Doak with ya and I’ll be laughin #wafc
@dhwafc83: People are high if they think Gerrard will come to us #wafc
@callumsrrr: I would love Stevie G at Wigan. #wafc
@joannewest1980: Don’t want Maloney. There, I’ve fucking said it. Big Dunc can jog on too!!!! Talal you are working my last nerve too!!! 🤯🤯 #wafc
@samf012321: if anyone thinks gerrard is going to get a prem job you’re joking yourself. it’ll be championship or rangers again. not saying it’ll be us but not a chance he gets a top flight job again for a while #wafc
@dave321wafc: The last time we had this much hype about a new manager we ended up appointing Owen Coyle 🤮 #wafc
@LeeWolv: STEVE GERRARD’S BLUE AND WHITE ARMYYYYYYY 🔵⚪️🔵⚪️ #wafc
@WAFCFAN2013: Just got a feeling it’s gonna be Steven Gerrard #wafc
@CraigHilton71: If #wafc do appoint Stevie G as is rumoured I personally think it would be a great appointment. Did a great job with Rangers and bringing a high profile name to the club will surely help with recruiting players. I really think he can take us places.
@chud99: Can everyone just chill out and stop slagging off Talal and every manager who’s linked with us, so negative for fook sake. Markets change as people back all the shite that’s written and leave it to and trust the boss, believe, up the tics 😁👍 , #wafc
@faz42: Been thinking about a gerrard or ferguson appointment and let’s be honest the potential off field they bring to the club is absolutely massive. Not only name recognition but sponsorship, extra fans, TV etc. #wafc
Get Gerrard in with Critchley as his assistant. Two birds with one stone #wafc pic.twitter.com/zUyBo3r8MY
