Stockport’s Dave Challinor gives scathing verdict after being thrashed 5-0 at home to Wycombe

Stockport’s Dave Challinor gives a scathing verdict of his side after being thrashed 5-0 at home to Wycombe on Tuesday night.

The Chairboys stormed to an emphatic victory to go top of the League One table, with Richard Kone netting twice, including a penalty, with Fred Onyedinma’s strike seeing the visitors go three-goals up inside 18 minutes at Edgeley Park.

Onyedinma’s header and Aaron Morley’s strike following the break then cemented Wycombe’s fifth successive league victory as they jumped above Birmingham on goal difference. Stockport meanwhile sit 10th.

Challinor said, per ManchesterWorld: “I’m not going to accept that and if the players are thinking that what I have just seen is acceptable that is far from the truth.

“It shows what we need to do and we need to be miles better at what we’re trying to do, more robust, stronger because you can have a game where technically your off it. But you need to be able to compete and deal with what is thrown at you and counter punch a little bit.

“I know what exactly what system suits this group of players and what system I want to play but unfortunately the personnel we have had missing hasn’t allowed us to do that.

“I’d love to have changed the game after 20 minutes but the reality of it was, I would be putting players at risk if they were on for that long. You’re then almost waiting to try and make a change.”

“This place will be bouncing on Saturday, and we’ve got to match that. We have to do everything we can.

“We’ve been questioned before and have been fortunate to have lots of good times, and not so many of these types of occasions, so there’ll be a new challenge for some, but I’m up for it and I’ll make sure the players are.”

Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield said, per Bucks Free Press: “We’re really fortunate to have a real special group of young men and I’m really proud of them.

“We wanted to come out of the blocks, we were so respectful of Stockport before the game, they’ve got a very good team and Dave (Challinor) has done a great job here over a number of years.

“We put the team together and we knew the threats they were going to pose and we felt like we needed to come out of the blocks quickly and impose ourselves on the game.

“I want to keep a lid on it because there’s so long to go.

“We’ve done a lot of work over the summer and put some stuff in place, but we’ve got a tough game at Wigan on Saturday and all our focus now has to be on recovering, preparing and making sure we turn up there with the energy we need.

“It can’t be underestimated what a tough game we had so enjoy the win, take the moment, reset and get ready to go again.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Stockport’s Dave Challinor gives a scathing verdict after being thrashed 5-0 at home to Wycombe…

@stopfordianTJ: Highlight of the match: final whistle.

@CSLarkin1990: I know Wycombe are a good team but absolutely zero fight tonight, utterly devoid of ideas.

@chaztiddy08: Sad to see some fans at the front of the main stand boo Addai off the pitch and cheer every time he made a save. How’s that going to help his confidence?

@nickmadden91: Thought we were worthy of a point tonight

@scfc_rob: Worst game in possibly years that. Bin off this system, Bin off Addai, Bin off Wootton, Complete Redo of the defence and midfield

@MathieuSCFC: Deserve to be top with that display. Well done and fair play Wycombe

@tommyshuffle1: Hahahahahahahahhahahahaha. Keep playing like that lads and your ‘fans’ will be back supporting United and City in no time. No doubt that stand behind the goal which was empty will be full when the Wrexham come into town. Mind the gap x

@Mad_Hatter_79: Lacked leadership and responsibility all over the pitch.

@lord_ian: Absolutely no complaints from me with the final scoreline. We were lucky it wasn’t 10-0. It easily could have been. We were bullied, even tormented, tonight. After seeing that tonight, things are looking extremely bleak for us. We severely lack leadership, and experience.

@BillyBy17: Absolute disgrace there’s plenty of players out there tonight who stole a wage

@lostinfens1: Wycombe were light years ahead of us. We weren’t poor because we didn’t show up. does DC ever get the team to watch the game after, if he does then let him & them explain how a team can be so bad.

@samjwjonas: F***ing abysmal. Not a single player above a 3/10. Challinor got it horrendously wrong and needs to hold his hands up. Yet again, an astonishing lack of any football IQ from every player. Worst performance in years that. Bolton & Wrexham should be fun.

@scott_k93: No complaints, 5-0 is fortunate, could have been 8, worst performance I’ve seen for years. DC needs to look at himself and define his style, I don’t know what we’re doing anymore.
