Stockport issue statement after racist and sectarian chanting heard

Stockport County have took to issue a statement after racist and sectarian chanting was allegedly heard in the match against Harrogate Town.

The Hatters have condemned the culprits for what was sang during Saturday’s League Two match at Edgeley Park, saying they have “no place” at the club.

The game between the two sides ended up finishing goalless, the away side halting a worrying run of four straight defeats.

Stockport were denied by the woodwork when Antoni Sarcevic nodded against the crossbar after Kyle Wootton’s clipped cross.

Sarcevic saw a point-blank effort palmed away by keeper Pete Jameson, while Harrogate also threatened when Luke Armstrong’s point-blank header was beaten out by Stockport stopper Vit Jaros.

County’s Ollie Crankshaw then hit the bar with a chip from 25 yards as the hosts continued to dominate before Stockport sub Ryan Croasdale curled a 20-yard shot a foot wide of the post.

An unmarked Will Collar saw his headed effort miss the target as he met Sarcevic’s floated free-kick.

Harrogate striker Armstrong saw his shot on the turn blocked with 10 minutes left, and his side almost grabbed a late winner when Alex Pattison’s shot from a narrow angle was superbly palmed away by Jaros.

Stockport issued a statement after the game: “The Club has received a number of reports of racist and sectarian chanting from sections of the ground during our fixture yesterday with Harrogate Town.

“This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at the Club – it has no place at County or in any of our communities.

“The matter is currently under investigation and any fans found to be engaging in this behaviour will be issued with banning orders from Edgeley Park.”

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday have also called the actions of a number of fans who threw a number of objects on to the pitch during their 2-2 draw with top-of-the-table Ipswich in League One “unacceptable”.

The game at Hillsborough was held up several times. In a statement, Wednesday said they “roundly condemn these unacceptable actions from a tiny minority of people who have undermined the good name of our club whilst putting into jeopardy the safety of players, officials and supporters”.

They also add that any supporters found to have breached EFL ground regulations, or the law, “will be sanctioned in the strictest possible manner, both by the club and relevant authorities”.

Fans have since reacted as Stockport issue a statement after racist and sectarian chanting had been heard at Edgeley Park…

@BrownlowJr: Plenty of sectarian garbage however 10 german bombers whilst I’m not condoning it as it may be offensive, provocative, inappropriate, irrelevant or many other things, it is not racist. County fans are not racist.

@mfha114: Good. Funny how none of this rubbish is sang away from home

@ClassicCounty: Good stuff. No place for this kind of crap.

@postmanplod69: Didn’t hear any racist stuff but plenty of sectarian stuff was going on in Upper tier 3, far worse than anything I heard in the 70/s 80/s when I first started watching County.

@SiClarkey: Good to hear this needs cutting out quickly. Crawley on Tuesday included songs we don’t need to hear aimed at the home keeper too. That were definitely racist.

@AshPalmersBrick: Something needs doing. If proper fans are getting sick of stuff and considering moving their seats then there’s a serious problem. I’m all for growing the fan base and it’s nice to see so many youngsters coming to the games but we want the right sort of fans not the idiots

@DanielD19358164: Cannot be singing that

@Zutroy85: Stockport fans engaging in racist and sectarian behaviour? Wow. Huge if true…

@ShaunCo56085755: Been going since 79 & this has always been at county but i thought that yesterday a line was crossed at home by UT3. I support the actions you take county its not needed anymore in our society 💙

@RyanThompson__3: We need more security #war #family

@mrspg01: No place for what was sung but please stop throwing the word racist into everything, there was NO racist chants

@SCFC_Blue_Army: Can we stop singing “Stamping on a Burnley fan until the fucker dies” whilst we are at it. Need some actual club officials up there rather than contract security to identify and ban the idiots.

@JCDC1988: If you have to be racist to have fun at a football match just go and be racist on your own in your house you miserable fucks. Stockport County doesn’t need or want you as fans.

@kstanddm: Some proper murk at the bottom. Decent folk will have to stand against far right groups preying on young impressionable lads searching for something to belong to.

@SkDeakin: Disappointed, but not surprised. Heard racist remarks at Crawley away from the younger fans. Sectarianism – seen a mvmt recently to align our fan base with Chelsea and Rangers. Ridiculous and unneeded, if fans want to know why, I’m more than happy to explain #stockportcounty

@MultiplexRant: Good. After setting the bar for great atmosphere in the National League last season we don’t need this moronic crap. Left a bad taste for my daughter’s first County game.

@county12: I really hope the morons are given life time bans. Although it’s great seeing big crowds back at EP, there has definitely been an influx of unwanted idiots who have jumped on the @StockportCounty success bandwagon and aren’t true County faithful fans.

@otcountyculture: Brilliant statement, it’s refreshing to know it’s being dealt with as a matter of urgency

@georgexedwards: Good on County calling it out. Edgeley ain’t Ibrox

@mjws93: This is truly embarrassing. Like when I heard Munich chants on the train to Bolton.

@Mike_Ellsmore: 300 banning orders incoming. Get the little cunts gone

@JonnyPickerin98: Get the little scrotes out.

@ASquire94: Good, it was absolutely disgusting yesterday! Kick them out, for good!

@Bigsybatt_: Good. Get them out
