Stevenage fans slams refereeing decision after keeper is ‘headbutted’ by Salford player

Stevenage fans slams a big refereeing decision after their keeper is ‘headbutted’ by a Salford City player during Saturday’s clash.

Callum Hendry, Stevie Mallan and Matt Smith all scored as Salford boosted their hopes of promotion / playoff place with a 3-1 victory over Stevenage, who fall a place to third in League Two.

After 80 minutes, Mallan and Hendry found themselves 2-0 up, before Luke Norris got one back. Smith got his side’s third of the game in injury time to seal the win. This leaves Salford fifth, five points behind Stevenage who are in the final automatic promotion place above the playoffs.

After 26 seconds, the hosts nearly got their first with Norris meeting Jordan Roberts’ cross with a header, only for the ball to go over.

Salford lacked much chances in the first half, and had Alex Cairns to thank for goalkeeper keeping Dan Sweeney’s header out.

The visitors were more determined in the second half, and opened the scoring in 65 minutes. Mallan side-footed home from acres of space.

Hendry came in unopposed, and he struck the ball low past Jon McCracken to double the lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Norris got one back for Boro in the 90th minute goal, shooting into the corner, but it wasn’t enough as Salford went down the other end and regained their two-goal lead with Smith finding the bottom corner.

One much talked about moment in the second half saw Salford go close to breaking the deadlock as Jon McCracken went down holding his head after an apparent headbutt by Callum Hendry, leaving an open goal.

The play was somehow allowed to continue, and Kane Smith was forced to make a crucial block on the line to keep the score level.

After minutes of treatment and getting his head bandaged up, McCracken was back on his feet and play continued, but there is anger at how there weren’t a red card for the Ammies player.

Salford wrote: “51′ – Sooooo close to getting ahead! McCracken and Hendry collide in the area, the goalkeeper stays down and the ball spills to Bolton, his shot is blocked as it heads towards an open goal.”

Stevenage tweeted: “50′ – Scare for Boro as despite McCracken going down with injury, play continues and Kane Smith clears an effort off the line. The referee has now paused play with the Scot receiving treatment.”

As mentioned, Stevenage fans slams a refereeing decision after their keeper is ‘headbutted’ by a Salford player…

@FarleyGinge: Jheeez

@owenrodbard_292: Wasn’t even given as a foul

@Matt_THFC95: It was another 90 minutes ruined by an arrogant ref today. Salford could have had 2 red cards easily. He was easily man of the match for Salford 👏

@FarleyGinge: To be honest, I’ve given up on the refereeing a long time ago.

@RobGWarren4: Classic league 2 ref, not even booked him. But as usual, he won’t get held accountable because he works in the most protected job in the world.

@NannyVeg: Here’s one for ref watch on @SkySports. Where’s the consistency @FA @EFL? How is that not even a booking? The standard of officiating throughout the leagues is shocking. Every week there’s controversy.

@SuffolkDave: IIRC, this was given as a drop ball. No red card. No yellow card. No free kick. Maybe Drysdale thinks all headbutts are fine, like his one on Alan Judge.

@k1ngcharlie: Good officiating today 👍

@stephen_dimmock: How on earth is Darren Drysdale paid to referee games, his performance at our game vs Harrogate last year was one of the most disastrous I’ve ever seen. Benjamin Speedie is another dreadful one too

@MarkEvery9: That’s at least a yellow, shit ref today, awful for both teams but cost Boro the game

@Tdary23: League 2 refs 😡 not even a yellow

@dom_flood: FUCK. ME.

@Chris_CA2: Shame

@nate_stato: @LowerLeagueLook this was the headbutt incident that Darren Drysdale pretended didn’t happen. Hendry didn’t even get a yellow, and went on to have a belting 2nd half. Shouldn’t have been on the field.

@ThomasWillett01: Shambolic ref

@ollie_long93: How’s he not stopped the game. ref is awful

@alexwillis_2k: Can’t believe that wasn’t a foul but what a clearance by Kane

@BoroPincay: Should be a red refs a joke

@TSFCPodcast: Unacceptable.. sort it out @FA

@StephCaw91: How is this not a red card. Disgusting from @SalfordCityFC

@katieee120: Didn’t get a yellow. We weren’t even awarded a foul….

@richiewalford: State of refs in League 2 ffs
