Steve Cooper makes an ‘interesting’ claim over the controversial VAR decisions in Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup tie against Liverpool.
The Championship outfit fell to a 1-0 defeat at the quarter-final stage despite giving a valiant effort against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Forest pushed their Premier League opponents all the way in a pulsating encounter at a bumper City Ground but were unable to make the most of a number of positive moments, losing out to a Diogo Jota goal in the 78th minute.
One moment however left people debating, with a VAR check needed for the winner, over what looked to be a rather tight offside call.
The video assistant was called into action again soon after, when Ryan Yates went down in the box under the challenge of Alisson Becker – with no penalty awarded.
WOW! Another huge VAR call

āI havenāt seen them back. I think it would have been interesting if they were at the other end,ā said Cooper, as reported by Nottingham Post. āItās the first time Iāve experienced VAR and the first time weāve had it here. I guess you have to trust the process of what it is. It would definitely have been interesting if they were down the other end.
āIt was tight for the goal, because obviously it went to the VAR with offside. Some of the questions I was getting asked when doing the TV interviews suggested it might have been an interesting one. Thatās what Iām saying, if it had been down the other endā¦
āWith the penalty shout, my instinct was, because of what the moment was and also, the guys who know Forest know Yatesy is one of the most honest playersā¦
āHe’s too honest, to be honest. That was the feeling, that there was no way he would go down. Plus you’re thinking, ‘go round him and score’.
“I haven’t seen it back. But, like I said, if it had been down the other end, in front of their supporters, then it would have been really, really interesting.
“It shouldn’t have made a difference that he got up, because you see it back on the camera and they can make a decision from there. But that’s Yatesy, he’s as honest as they come.
“It’s just one of those things. But I don’t want to talk about VAR too much, it was more a case of what could have been in the game. On the whole I thought we handled them really well, we just couldn’t make the most of the moments we created.ā
Diogo Jota had doubts that his goal for Liverpool against Nottingham Forest was going to stand: “Yeah I thought it was tight,” he said. “I always trust myself to be onside, but you never know.
“Obviously it was a tough game, they are a great team. They play with a lot of intensity, they gave us a proper fight, but in the end I think we deserved to go through.
“They have one big chance from the cross, they gave us a really big challenge here tonight, their fans were outstanding. It was a really tough game but we are now into the semi final.
There was a lot of talk as Steve Cooper makes an ‘interesting’ claim over controversial VAR decisions in the FA Cup tie…
šø No penalty awarded to Forest despite contact between Alisson and Ryan Yates. VAR deems he dragged his back leg to cause unnecessary contact. pic.twitter.com/3SAAdPobXW

@Jimsthename: Isnāt that how all of the top 6 get their pens?
@cpfc_jw19: VAR makes the rules up ⦠if that was Salah Kane Jota Sterling etc itās given
@craigharper7: Here we go again…. go back to Richarlison v Spurs… given by ref taken away by VAR as clear and obvious error…. You can’t make this up can you
@iamandrewholden: What a shock. Iām stunned.
@scars81_: Because he did drag his leg. Clear as day
@Tactical_Times: The only offenses here were the simulated contact from Ryan Yates – an attempt to deceive the referee and deserving of a yellow card – and the multiple Nottingham Forest player who immediately surrounded Pawson and demanded a penalty be awarded.
@Morris103J: Goalkeeper didn’t bring him down. He left his right foot dragging onto the floor and onto the gk hand. So he basically played for it.
@yorkywoody: Quite blatantly left his foot there then fell over. Right decision.
@jordanrmckay_: Heās left his leg hanging back to make contact with Alissonās arm š any other club and this wouldnāt be a discussion at all
@danbright88: Piss poor support from LiVARpool only knew they were there in when they scored the offside goal, we deserved to score tonight and var didnāt even check our peno shout, best team lost, proud how far we came, Steve cooper is the man to take us up.Back to the league run #nffc #FTID
@AlanShennan3: VAR only for Premier League clubs then
@jbeigge: LiVARpool back at it again ffs
@bailey290103: how tf is that not a pen
@LFC_Torres9: Because he dived?
LiVARpool truly pay the refs, how tf is jota onside but lukaku isnt pic.twitter.com/HAJxNuvoc1

@binkybunny7: Blatantly offside ffs š
@RokerEndDweller: How that isnāt offside ?
@ScribbinsLiamm: Clear offside, LiVARpool paying off var again
@antbrianlord: VAR IS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE #nffc
@RyanM11M: So can VAR just decide which angle they look at offside calls to ensure it goes in the favour of bigger teams? Absolutely ridiculous, glad to be leaving this league! #lfc #nffc
@BobOlinger: Basically theyāll use whichever angle that suits what they want to happen and then Draw a line.
@PStandall: Why isn’t there a line down from Jotas shoulder
@mnorcross84: 1) Why is the line not even touching the Forest player? 2) Why isn’t there a line from Jota’s shoulder?
