THEIR CLUB STATEMENT READ:
“We can confirm that Harton & Westoe CW FC (formerly Simonside SC) have resigned from the Wearside League and will fold as a football club before the start of the 2019-20 season.
“This decision hasn’t been taken lightly as the club was first formed in 1959 by the father of current club secretary Kevin Gibson, and has continually played in various local leagues every year since then, changing name to Harton & Westoe CW FC in 2012 to reflect the venue we played at.
“This isn’t the end of the road for the management, players, and club officials however, as everyone involved with our side have been invited to and after careful consideration will be joining Boldon CA FC.
“For many seasons now, Boldon CA FC Chairman Kevin Oliver has said we should join to make one very strong setup because many players have moved between our sides in recent seasons, and that we’d be stronger together rather than competing with and against each other.
“We are proud to have played our part in playing football in the north east, and believe we have set very good standards for our level of football, both on and off the pitch, especially at Harton Miners Welfare, but also brought much needed revenue through the bar to the Welfare over the years we have played there, as well as supporting a very good local charity, The Charlie Cookson Foundation.
“With the impending integration of South Shields FC’s Academy teams at the Welfare, we now feel however that the time is right for us to move on and merge with Boldon CA FC, whilst wishing everyone who utilizes the Welfare every success, which remains a fantastic sporting and social venue.
“We would like to thank Harton & Westoe FC Junior’s chairman Phil Catley, along with Kevin Millar and Norman Dempsey and all of the other coaches who independently run a fantastic junior section based at Harton Tech College and wish the junior sides the very best for the future. Many junior section players have represented our side over the last 2 or 3 seasons, and we hope that we can offer them a very good route into a high level of senior football in the future at Boldon.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported our football club, also to all of our many sponsors over the years, with special mention to this season’s main sponsor Minchella & Co Ice Cream Parlour’s, to long standing sponsors Peter Johnson (Dignity) Funerals, Vic Youngs Ltd of South Shields, Dicksons Pork Butchers, Charlton & Co Chartered Accountants, Orange Box Training, Carmeleon Concepts, Paul Davis Aerials, and CMC Digital Ltd. Any current advertising board will be moved across and mounted pitch side at Boldon Colliery Welfare in due course.
Thanks also to Melanie Hamlon Massage Muscle Relief, and player sponsors; Moving Homes, Thomas Potter Ltd, Full Potential Sports Therapy, The Rabbits Hutch, North East Football Scouting, Limiteless Training & Nutrition, Stevie G Fitness, JPAGE, T.R.C & N.P.C., and Prime Gas Services.
“We’d also like to thank Mark Sleightholme, groundsman at Harton Miners Welfare, for helping prepare one of the finest pitches in local football, as well as the staff both on reception and behind the bar at the Welfare.
We look forward to our involvement in the next chapter of another very longstanding club Boldon CA FC, who have roots tracing back to the formation of the Wearside League in 1892.
“On behalf of the committee, management and players Mal Cooper, Chairman, Harton & Westoe CW FC.”
