Stats make for embarrassing reading, but Liverpool were lucky to have only lost 2-0 to PSG, who really should have scored more.
Desire Doue’s deflected strike and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s cool finish gave the defending champions a well deserved win in the Champions League quarter final first leg.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot said “the game at Anfield will be completely different”, but fans aren’t so optimistic that can be done.
There were just three shots for Liverpool overall on Wednesday night. None on target. It’s the first time they failed to attempt a shot on target in a Champions League game in the since facing Atalanta in November 2020.
That result also meant Liverpool have now lost four straight away games for the first time since April 2012.
Julien Laurens (ESPN journalist): “I think PSG will look back at the game and think OK there should be of been three, four or five easily. The stats are such an embarrassing reading if you’re a Liverpool player or fan. Liverpool had no answers tonight.”
Stats according to Opta (via Sky Sports)
– Liverpool’s 16th defeat of the season in all competitions
– Liverpool have lost four away games in a row in all competitions for the first time since between February and April 2012
– Liverpool have lost three consecutive matches for the third time this season, the first time they’ve had three runs of three or more consecutive defeats in a campaign since 1953/54, when they were relegated from the top-flight
– Liverpool failed to have a shot on target in a Champions League match for the first time since November 2020 against Atalanta
– This was Liverpool’s 34th Champions League knockout-stage game since the start of 2017/18, but only the second in which Mo Salah didn’t play, after the 2018/19 semi-final second leg against Barcelona

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to TNT Sports:Ā “Tough, tough work. Always expected. I think we defended with a lot of bodies around the box. Unfortunately, the first goal is a deflection. We get some small moments on the break where we could have done better.
“But now it’s a quick turnaround, and we have Fulham waiting for us as well.”
On playing with a back five: “They always move around everywhere. We have to communicate and follow your man and take risks in that sense. As well and wait for the right moment to win the ball. Hopefully, we can be much better, especially possession at Anfield.
Van Dijk, speaking to TNT Sports, On Ibrahima Konate’s tackle: “A clear good tackle, so it is not a coincidence that this should be disallowed.”
On Giorgi Mamardashvili’s performance being crucial: “Hopefully, very crucial. Last year we played a game here which we should have lost. Alisson’s best game of his career, but we couldn’t get the job done at Anfield.”
On the second leg:Ā “We have to be absolutely spot on. Hopefully, our fans can play a big part in that. Our fans are the backbone of the club, and hopefully they can be there for us.”
On PSG having a rest week:Ā “We have to focus on ourselves and that is the only thing we are going to do.”
“We should be lucky we only lost 2-0”

Arne Slot speaking to TNT Sports: “If you reflect on the whole game I think we are lucky with only losing two nil. The first goal felt hard. I think it was very good for us we are still in the tie, we can bring them to Anfield and we know how good Anfield can be for us.”
On the game between Bayern and Madrid: “I watched the game yesterday between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. You need performances like that, you need a hardworking team that do everything against a team like PSG. When we needed Alisson Becker he was there for us. He played a good game today.”
On whether they created enough chances:Ā “Yes and no, yes because we want to create much more chances, no because there was not a lot to create for us. We tried many times to get them high, but they were able to play through us when we went man-to-man. I think that happened in the second half as well. There were a few times with players in promising positions.”
“We deserve a little more”

Here’s how fans reacted as stats make for embarrassing reading, but Liverpool find themselves lucky to have only lost 2-0 to PSG…
@f0rtune_x: Watching Liverpool under this manager is like watching a horror show on repeat. Tactics are non-existent, attack is toothless, defense is a sieve⦠PSG schooled us, and Iām starting to wonder if weāll ever go anywhere with this clown in charge
@Ash_LFC7: Not been this embarrassing to support this club since 2010. If you had an ounce of shame, you would not tweet again this season.
@SlotsBaldHead: Not a single shot on target lads!
@pennant83: I was a Liverpool fan way before I became a pro footballer. As someone who genuinely cares & watches every single game⦠This is a disaster. Slot, you won the league last year with a style of play and DNA of Liverpool that Klopp built. This team is now close to unrecognisableā¦
@ScouserChrisLFC: Canāt wait for Arne Slot to say heās happy with that result š¤£
@AnfieldEdition: 2-0 flatters us hugely. Weāve been pummelled. I donāt think anyone has any hope that we turn it around next week and that speaks volumes. We had the chaos ball at the start of the season. We were crap. We went defensive, went on an āunbeaten runā where we couldnāt create. We were crap. We played five at the back. We were crap. Whatever Slot tries, it doesnāt work. Donāt know how anyone can back him any longer. Remember when Slot gave an interview in January saying how the Premier League isn’t “his style” of football and his style of football was “Liverpool vs PSG”. He had the opportunity to play that way tonight and bring the game to them. He went five at the back. Utterly laughable.
@Gavstar79: Garbage performance again. PSG will batter Liverpool next Tuesday š and Fulham will also get a result at the weekend š
@SharinLFC: Very lucky itās only 2-0. Still a massive mountain to climb next week, especially with the lack of belief in this team right now. Manager is hanging the players out to dry with his tactics and decisions at the moment. Never out of it at 2-0 but have to be perfect. Give the fans a reason to get behind you. Thereās a way to lose football games and recently weāve not even seen any fight or grit. Heads drop too easily. Fans will always be there but they need to give us a reason to believe #LFC
@LFCphoto: FT: PSG 2-0 Liverpool. Well… at least it wasn’t more. Could have been 6-0. Could have been 10-0 if we weren’t playing 7 at the back. An exercise in damage limitations. Anfield awaits the second leg. We will need a miracle.
Liverpool were supposed to use last season’s defeat to PSG to learn where they could improve and close the gap over the summer. Instead, they completely ripped up their squad and have ended up as a far worse team. Pretty fortunate to only lose 2-0 tonight.

Courage has usually defined Liverpoolās play, especially in Europe. Courage, not caution. Wanting the ball, wanting to take the game to the opposition, embracing the challenge. There was little courage in Liverpoolās set-up, actions or substitutions against PSG. Sad to see. #LFC

These teams went toe to toe a year ago, then Liverpool spent Ā£450m, PSG only Ā£100m (and sold the best player in that tie, Gigi Donnarumma)… but one team has gone hugely backwards and the gap between them now huge. #LFC played off park and got away with one that it’s only 2-0.
