Squirrel goes viral after running across pitch, stopping play in the Hull v Bristol City game

A squirrel goes viral after running across the pitch, stopping play in the Hull v Bristol City game on Saturday afternoon.

The game was halted a number of times as it ran into both nets, sidestepped multiple ball boys and then jumped into the crowd to cause chaos.

There were also chants of “sign him up”, “we want our squirrel back” and “you’re getting mauled by the squirrel” from fans watching it played out in the stands.

Bristol City reported that there was an 10 additional minutes after the squirrel had interrupted play in the second half.

The game itself saw Hull go ahead on the 24th minute through Oli McBurnie, but then the visitors hit back, with Rob Atkinson heading in from a corner and Ross McCrorie making it 2-1 just before half time.

Bristol City then went 3-1 up when Emil Riis calmly finished Scott Twine’s through-ball on 50 minutes, then came the bizarre interruption when the game came to a stop of two occasions, due to that rogue squirrel.

Kieran Dowell got one back for Hull on 78 minutes, but it proved too little too late as Gerhard Struber’s side.

The result sees Hull sit 4th with 54 points from 31 games played, 4 points from 2nd place Middlesbrough, Boro and 3rd place Ipswich (on 54 points) have a game in hand. Bristol City sitting 8th in the table with 46 points from 31 games played, a point from the playoff places.

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber told BBC Radio Bristol:

“We know what we had a week ago and I think today was reaction time and the boys showed a really good face against a team that had a really big momentum and many, many wins.

“The win and the performance was on a really high level otherwise you could not win here.

“The resilience was on a really high level, and this is something that you need in the Championship, you need in the end front foot style players who are always ready to press high, but also players that are smart and understand what the game needs.

“In the end our box defending was great and to bring the points home in this way was not easy, but we did it.”

On the squirrel: “In the end we enjoyed it a little bit, especially when we saw they could not catch the squirrel.

“It was a lovely animal. I like animals but this was really funny to see how they wanted to catch it.

“I like it when I see the boys in the same way as the squirrel ‘no-one can catch us’, maybe this was good to see.

“It also interrupted the game in some momentum, but how we dealt with that was also really good to see from my boys.”

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside:

“We made a lot of crucial mistakes in today’s game.

“We started well I think, we controlled their everything, but after a while we started to lose easy duels or easy balls, we were very soft in those duels and they had a good two chances when it was 0-0.

“We took the lead with with a nice action, great finishing from Oli and then I think that we brought them into the game with our two mistakes.

“Two cheap goals because we are there with the numbers, we can control those players there, but when you make those mistakes it’s mostly a goal, they punish you immediately.”

@BatterySgt: In both goals and no one could catch him, he was unplayable

@Manor_Kez77: The life of a Bristol City fan. One week you’re losing 5-0 at home, questing the club ambition and January transfer activity. The next, you’re winning 3-2 away from home and voting a squirrel as player of the match! I love supporting this club! Never change! ❤️

@GrahamCannon: Hull fan here – class work Admin. 👏👏👏 🐿️🐿️🐿️

@JakeW2311: That squirrel at hull mind 😂.

@cgiles23: Can he play up front?
