‘Spineless’ – Fans react as Phil Parkinson comments on Wrexham losing at Chesterfield

Fans react as Phil Parkinson comments on his Wrexham side losing at Chesterfield, seeing the Welsh outfit drop to 15th after three games.

The Spireites took an early lead when wing-back Jeff King ran down the right before cutting inside to score, with Akwasi Asante hitting the post soon after.

Chesterfield then doubled their lead when Armando Dobra robbed the ball off Wrexham goalkeeper Mark Howard and teed up Ollie Banks to score.

Wrexham responded after half time, but couldn’t produce a comeback and the incredible away support was left gutted with the result.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said after the game: “We conceded two avoidable goals, simple as that. We started the game well, I thought we were in control.

“But the first goal we let the full-back run – we spoke about that yesterday, how key that was to the way Chesterfield play – and the second one is just deal with the ball, no need to go back to Mark (keeper Howard) who then has to deal with it.

“We need to come out on Saturday, roll our sleeves up and play like a real team at home.

“The lads ran and they tried but I just think we’ve got to up the ante in terms of the demands on ourselves to produce better crossing, better final ball and better shooting.

“There were times last year where a set-play might get us back into it and then it lifts the confidence.

“I didn’t really feel we went in the box with that real commitment to go and get a goal.

“Their defenders were more resolute, their keeper was more resolute and at the other end they created more than we did and we’ve got to look at that.”

Parkinson acknowledges there is expectancy on Wrexham to deliver this season, having lost in the National League playoffs last year.

“We know that and we know how to carry it and we just need to focus on what we need to do,” Parkinson said.

“But Chesterfield are a big club themselves and everyone’s talking about them this season and they’ve got expectancy on them.”

“When you lose a game you’ve got to respond and I’m looking for that response at the weekend.”

“I think it is a night to be proud of the team, the performance, the supporters and the town,” Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb said.

“It was a great performance. At half-time you are thinking it is going to take a heck of a U-turn to not be happy with the performance in the second-half. But the lads kept it up and extinguished their threats.

“I think we are seeing the patterns that are worked on in training, the end product, the finishing positions.

“You have got Liam Mandeville running 100 metres at the end to put in a tackle and those things don’t go unnoticed. We need to do that week in week out to get us out of this league.”

On the performances of Tyrone Williams and Jamie Grimes, he added: “The back four are looking like they have played together since George Graham at Arsenal. Overall, it was a very encouraging night.

“It is really pleasing they are listening to the manager’s instructions and giving the supporters go home and be excited about.

“We are only three games in but the early bricks are there to build the house to get us over the line in the long run.

“There is a real team ethic at the moment going on with the boys, the squad is looking strong. The gaffer makes the point about the players not being involved being just important.

“We are only three games in but we are going in the right direction but it is so early. We are doing all right but there is a hell of a long way to go.”

As mentioned, fans react to Phil Parkinson comments on Wrexham losing at Chesterfield…

@cbrown164_: Wrexham blaming Phil Parkinson 🤣 you’re a shite club, with shite fans, and shite owners. You’ll always be non-league 🙈

@gavlea82: This is all down to Phil Parkinson

@ChristoffBaker: Phil parkinson will not get wrexham promoted.

@mattyw13: It will take a while because nobody at @Wrexham_AFC has a spine or can make a decision but when that ” Club Statement: Phil Parkinson” is finally tweeted it will be a huge relief!

@Valentine06: Spineless interview that. Mumbling & bumbling his way through it without really saying anything of any note. Would he motivate anyone?!

@WrxLewis: Why are we so obsessed with set pieces? We’ve got some great, creative players that didn’t get on the pitch together so that he could keep his three CBs on for corners and free kicks? We were 2 0 down and creating nothing.

@lukeCFC25: As a Chesterfield fan this sounds like a manager that’s run out of ideas.

@kelvinandNii3: Unless he’s saying he’s leaving I don’t give a shit

@ozziemold53: Manager looked very deflated.

@Russell30913828: Where’s this unrest in the dressing room come from that was mentioned tonight are the players showing there loss of faith in parky

@alanbrown11: 5 3 2 doesn’t work against 442 when they press hard but parky won’t change his tactics time to go

@JohnMcLintock: @thehumphreyker this manager is leading us nowhere. Same old,same old. Ask Sunderland fans what they thought of him. Change is needed immediately. The budget he has had at his disposal and the whole of the National League are laughing at us. One win in six including last season.

@robertlowe933y1: He’s sounds a beaten man like he was after the play off defeat. We are on a very poor run continuing from last seasons end.

@Jmillzey: This man has a great team and he is not using them well at all, players look unorganised and it seems like they are disinterested. I’d give him a few more games to turn it round then get rid I’d he can’t.

@davekeighley80: Try something different to blood relying on long throws and set pieces! Teams have worked us out and it’s easy to defend against!

@keevs_89: Looks like a man who’s under real pressure. The next few games could well determine his future.

@LukeWalshFCHT: I know it’s early into the season… but I don’t really think Parkinson is the man to take Wrexham to the EFL (gonna come back on me) I can really see Wrexham learning off what Stockport did with Rusk in the previous campaign.

@Celynpryce4818: Doesn’t have a clue what he’s on about

@jamiewxmfc: The things to work on are stop playing 5-3-2 you fucking dinosaur
