Southern League match abandoned at half time with police called in

A Southern League Central Division One match had to be abandoned at half time this weekend with police called in over an altercation.

Oxfordshire outfit Kidlington played host to Bedford Town on Saturday, but the home team refused to come out for the second half.

Bedford had been leading 1-0 at the break thanks to Connor Tomlinson’s strike on the verge of the interval, but the non league game didn’t go any further amidst reports of an fight in the tunnel.

Bedford Town’s official Twitter page has outlined details of the incident: “Farcical scenes here at Kidlington as the home side are refusing to come back out of the dressing room from half-time.

“There was an altercation as the players went off, and the police are involved. There will be an official statement from the club at the appropriate time.”

This is not the first controversial moment for the Eagles this season after an FA Trophy tie was abandoned in the final minute due to a brawl between Bedford Town and Potters Bar in November 2021.

There is no word as to why Kidlington refused to come out for the second half but onlookers have commented that the Police are involved.

A statement released by Bedford Town on Sunday lunchtime provided no more details as to what occurred, with mystery now surrounding what will happen next.

“Bedford Town Football Club are disappointed that yesterday’s Southern League Division One Central match against Kidlington FC was abandoned at half-time.

“It is still unclear what the facts are, but what is known at this stage is that match officials made the decision to abandon the game at the start of the second half, when Kidlington refused to return to the pitch for the second half.

“The club’s staff are working with the Football Association and the Southern League to investigate the situation and assist with any decisions regarding the outcome of the match.”

“Until that has been concluded, there will be no further comment from the club.”

Bedford Town stay top of Southern League Central Division One following the abandonment, but title rivals Berkhamsted closed the gap to two points after a 2-1 victory at Hertford Town.

Social media users reacted on the Southern League match abandoned at half time with police called in…

@Drwhite10: 🤣🤣

@escapedBrexit: I see the attendance was 3 times Kidlingtons normal gate. Maybe they want another game to boost their takings even more!

@Theboyw06881017: Absolute scenes!!!

@Noholdsbarred19: Wouldn’t surprise me if the local FA end up fining you. Heard recently of lots of shit decisions by local FA’s to punish teams for doing nothing. I hope it won’t be @BedsFA as they have had a field day in recent seasons fleecing teams.

@lukebb84: What’s gone on here then?

@Rob4481587: Just one regular day of non-league

@Adam_Allcroft: Bloody hell

@darcy996: Non league football is always undefeated

@Vex_OG: What the absolute fuck 😂😂

@theboygibbo: What happened in the Kidlington v Bedford game?? Sounds bit mad

Paul O’grady: The beautiful game that sets examples to children!!!

Kevin Jones: Couldn’t cope with the amount of away fans for a start. Then to refuse to come out for the second half just shows they should be no where near this level. Are the supporters going to get reimbursed the travel expenses and admission? People are struggling to pay bills and heat their homes , pay their hard earned cash following eagles home and away and this is how we get treated. Village team with no morals.

Alex Walke: What a bunch of babies Kidlington are! 👶 I want my money back after seeing only half a game

Graham Turvey: There was a “disturbance” as the players went down the tunnel at half time. Allegations being thrown around about what happened. Police allegedly contacted. It appears Kidlington declined to come out for 2nd half due to whatever happened. I didn’t see the incident, I just heard a lot of shouting.

Paul Robert Salisbury: It was all one way traffic to be fair, Eagles completely dominant. Kidlington players looked defeated at half time. In my opinion they looked like they didn’t want a second half.

Nicky Locker: 3 points to Bedford surely??? we are getting that good teams don’t even wana come out for second half 🤪😀💙🦅

Mike John: One comment from an official after the game some of the lower graded grounds players tunnels are TO NARROW AND THESE AREAS HAVE BEEN CONFRONTING PROBLEMS BEFORE 😤
