Southend United boss Kevin Maher calls for change after naming just one sub for the 2-1 defeat against Bromley on Saturday.
The Shrimpers are unfortunately still under a transfer embargo as they live in hope that the takeover can finally reach the point of completion of a takeover by a consortium, which is being led by Australian businessman Justin Rees.
The consortium gave an update on how the takeover was going earlier in December and remains hopeful that it be “brought to closure shortly” and that they are working to make sure the transfer embargo is lifted along with it.
Saturday saw Southend lose at home to Bromley, but you can’t fault the effort and determination of all the players and staff despite all the have had too go through on and off the pitch.
Goalkeeper David Martin had to go off with 63 minutes on the clock, with Southend losing 2-0 at the time, before defender Gus Scott-Morriss took his place and kept a clean sheet for the rest of the game.
Kevin Maher said on BBC Essex Sport: “It’s papering over what’s going on.
“Something’s got to happen, and happen soon, because we’ll have injuries obviously and you can’t go into a game with one sub, but we had no choice in that.”
The result leaves Southend sitting 16th in the National League table, just two points above the drop zone.
“For me, we were the better team – more chances, more balls in the box, everything was in our favour bar the scoreline, which is obviously the most important thing,” said Maher.
“They’re second in the league, and so well organised and they’re a good side – but we’ve got an outfield player in goal, no subs, a centre-half up front, and we were like the Alamo in the second half.
“That tells me that if we were allowed to work properly, we’d be up matching them and pushing (leaders) Chesterfield.”
Maher said keeper Martin took a “whack in the ribs” and was “very sore”, while his replacement Scott-Morriss clattered into an advertising hoarding during the first half, before putting putting the gloves.
Maher went on to say: “He’s that type of character, he’ll do anything. For him to do that and Brook to go up front and get the goal was incredible.
“The ovation the fans gave the players was fully justified.”

An obvious observation but Blues have no strikers in their starting line up this afternoon

I can’t be alone in thinking this is just a bit ridiculous now

Blues sub: Vilhete is on for Martin and Scott-Morriss is in goal

It’s just completely farcical this is even allowed in the National League. It’s more Southend Sceptre League stuff this.

An incredible effort. No strikers, no goalkeeper for most of the second half and just one substitute but Blues fought hard and troubled a team second in the league.

This was the social media reaction after Southend boss Kevin Maher calls for change after naming just one sub for the defeat against Bromley…
@ShrimperStats: No point over-analysing that one. The off-field situation has completely dictated the match. Top effort from everyone once again; it’s what we do. 💙
@wigs92: So proud to support this this great football team 🟦⬜️
@lee_currie: 1 sub no keeper for a period I would say playing second in the league that’s a fantastic effort from the boys and staff 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@RyanStubbs_: This one is on the @TheVanaramaNL. All whilst they keep these restrictions on us, it isn’t a level playing field. Even then though, we deserved more than what we got today against a team who are up the top end of the league, somehow. Referee played in to their hands as well.
@SenseiPhil2: What an incredible performance by this incredible group. Proud of every single one of them! Against all the odds, by far the better team and deserved at least a draw. 👏 👏 👏
@ollieoleary17: so proud of this team, fuck RM, fuck @TheVanaramaNL
@SimplyShrimpers: Well played lads. We all know who’s to blame
@owen_stone96: Despite the result, absolutely phenomenal efforts. Every single lad fighting for the badge. The @TheVanaramaNL are a disgrace for forcing us too play under these circumstances
@euniesufc: This is becoming a fucking disgrace. 12 players and can’t replace 3 that have left/injured yet our RWB is playing 30mins in goal and our tallest centre half is playing up top. We’ve been in an embargo for over a year, @TheVanaramaNL sort your shit out! #martinout
@LauraBlenes: This is disappointing – doesn’t mean I’m disappointed in the guys though. We were the better team. Second in the league and took added time to get a goal. We got one back and held them I think. We don’t give up. We believe. We are BLUE 💙🦐 @SUFCRootsHall
@ejll____: We may have lost but still incredibly proud of the boys. Cannot fault the effort 1 bit. @TheVanaramaNL are a disgrace.
@Thorpe7: No other team in the league could be as competitive as this Southend team has been with all what’s been going on! Couldn’t be prouder 👏🏻
@Declan_Mcghie: Unlucky boys. Odds all against us today
@LawrenceBenge: With everything going against us really can’t fault the performance today
@MattyMarr17: FUCK IT! Unlucky lads, didn’t think you’d get put under any more crazy circumstances than than you already have been and you still gave yourself a chance at getting something! Should be proud! Martin Out and fuck the NL
@_JamesWood_: Just immense pride. Everything against us and I think we still edged it. The greatest ever bunch of Shrimpers.
