Southampton go viral with an amusing response after a Norwich fan’s attempted taunt on social media after the Saints’ win on Wednesday.
Tonda Eckert’s side climbed into the Championship play-off places as they put an end to Norwich’s four-match winning streak.
A 1-0 win sees Southampton extend their unbeaten run in league and cup to 13 games, while also jumping above Wrexham into 6th place on goal difference thanks to Finn Azaz’s 10th goal of the season.
A Norwich fan, @ryanmez79, replied to Southampton’s full time tweet, writing: “Well done, your £200M parachute payment mega team beat an injured squad 1-0!”
To which the admin for Southampton’s social media replied: “1-1. Parachute payments 90+9′.”

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:
“You will have some games in the season when it comes down to the sacrifice of the players, the desire to win a game of football.
“We had some quality moments up the pitch and just needed to be resilient at the other end – I’m very happy.
“Double figures for Finn now, he’s been working for that and now he has to make sure to keep going.
“Southampton has not been known for being a team that suffers and accepts not having the ball for a couple of moments but being resilient – and we are making some good steps in that direction.”
Eckert, per Sky Sports:
“That was a tough one. There is a reason why they have won 10 of the last 13 games.
“It is nice. It is always nice to take step after step but you have to play until the end.
“There is still a lot of games coming up, things can go so fast in either direction. We have done well to keep our head down and maintain a level of humility.
“It is very important not to look too far ahead. We have done well not to get carried away with the negatives or positives. That isn’t going to change.”
Norwich head coach Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:
“We were the dominant team against a team in really good form – first half it was in the balance, but the second half was totally ours.
“In total, we had more ball possession, more shots on target, more chances than them, more passes, more corners and several clear chances and the goalkeeper played the game of his life.
“Those things happen in football but the way my team played was really impressive, for sure in the second half.
“It’s a really good performance, but we don’t have the result we deserve. We need to continue in every game trying to push for great performances like this. I’m not busy with the ranking [table], I’m busy getting the best out of this squad.”
Clement, per Sky Sports:
“I am not a dreamer, that is for the fans. I made that mistake in the first 15 years of my career.
“It is of no use to look at the rankings. We have no control of what other teams will do. It is about our performances and then we will see where we are in the last two or three games.
“It is already amazing that so many people talk to me about play-offs when in November the club had nine points.
“Everyone could see we deserved more from this game.
“It is football that you lose this type of games and there is a reason their goalkeeper is the man of the match.
“I am more proud of the team than gutted about the loss. It didn’t happen much that I have told the team I am proud of them.”
