South Shields in disbelief over penalty decision which sees Curzon Ashton snatch late win

South Shields have been left in disbelief over a penalty decision which then sees Curzon Ashton snatch a very late win.

Curzon Ashton got their first goal of the game in the 17th minute, brilliant hold up play from Spencer, then he found Luke Griffiths who bent his effort into the bottom corner.

Will Jenkins got the hosts level in the 94th minute, holding the ball up and whipped it into the top corner.

However, Curzon Ashton were awarded a spot kick on the 96th minute.

South Shields said in their match report: “We were still playing in the 96th and Curzon had a corner, the ball was played into the box, Broadbent gets a head to it and it flies up into the air with Curzon attempting an overhead kick which is unsuccessful, the ball is now in open play with Briggs running towards it with a Curzon player behind him. Briggs (still on both feet) is on the end of a sliding challenge from Curzon Ashton’s No.4 Marcus Poscha (that is behind him), both go to the floor, and in complete disbelief the referee blows his whistle for a penalty to Curzon Ashton. The penalty is converted by Hayhurst and Curzon Ashton take all three points home with them.”

South Shields boss Elliott Dickman told The Gazette: “The emotions are all over the place at the moment. There is anger, frustration, disappointment.

“We weren’t great in the first-half, we were ponderous, not our usual selves – but in the second-half we had a lot of the ball, applied a lot of pressure and equalised through a tremendous goal.

“But then we shoot ourselves in the foot again with a goal against, it’s a penalty, but I don’t want to say too much than that really.

“It’s frustrating because we spoke to a few of the players and what we have seen in the two games we’ve played is not a surprise because of what we’ve done and what the players have done last season.

“We can’t live on that now, we have to move forward and make sure we find a way to play our game and play our way.”

Curzon Ashton boss Craig Mahon said on the penalty incident: “I’m not going to lie I didn’t see it clearly, I don’t know if it was a penalty or not.

“I know if you’re in my position you’re delighted, but if you’re in South Shields manager position you’re fuming, and I would be too because I couldn’t see what actually happened.

“But we’re not going to like tell the referee no it’s not a pen, it’s if he gives it and I think we got lucky a little bit with the penalty as well I think the keeper was close to saving it, but the ball’s in the back of the net and we’ve got three points.”

@JoeToonMad1: Biggest joke of a decision I’ve ever seen. Clearly match fixing by the referee and should be investigated.

@TheDB30: Ref’s had a shocker. It’s a 50/50 or a free kick to Shields at most.
