“I really enjoyed that game,” said Evatt to the club website after the game. “I know it got a little bit feisty at the end and there was probably a little bit of petulance, but I said to the players we should take that as a compliment, because I think the way we played frustrated them, surprised them, and it was a brilliant experience for us all.
“It was a really closely fought game, really well contested, and considering what they are and where they are it’s something we should take belief from. It’s great that we’ve managed to come back and put on a good performance because understandably people will carry frustration.
“There were positives from last season as well and we mustn’t lose sight of that. We know we let everyone down, but we have owned that and apologised for that, and we don’t become a bad team overnight.
“For the returning fans who haven’t seen us since that day – and I’m not going to keep speaking about it – I think they will take some good belief from that and will go home happy and pleased and say all is not lost and we’re in a decent place going into this season.”
Fiorentina saw three players receive yellow cards late on after Bolton substitute George Johnston was also cautioned.
“They were in the Conference League final, so these are a top European team,” added Evatt. “Everyone uses the word belief in football and belief has to be earned.
“You earn belief by performing like that, so we’ll take some belief and credit from that, but we know there’s a lot of work to do.
“As a spectator I really enjoyed the game and as a coach to go against that quality is fantastic and I was really pleased with the way the players stood up.
“There’s progression there I can see it. We know we are light and need some bodies in but we are dining at a different table now and we have to be patient and make sure we get the right ones at the right price. Players are returning from injury, so all in all, I’m satisfied with where we’re at.”

This is how fans reacted to the slide tackle by George Johnston on Moise Kean which leads to a scuffle between Bolton and Fiorentina players…
@JimTheWanderer1: 100% ball. Was expecting a 90 degree leg the way he was rolling and banging the floor.
@tksalwander: I’ve missed him
@becsholden: How we’ve missed him 😂
@richarddoxsey: Perfectly good challenge, beautifully timed !
@Generali11: Ex-ref here. Yellow card for excessive force and not being in control in the tackle. You can disagree that’s what the law should be but the laws are very clear. It doesn’t matter if you get the ball or not.
@WilliamMcGuire1: It’s a great tackle. Players’ reactions are ridiculous.
@kramjm1977: Can’t see much wrong with that apart from Kean doing an audition for Platoon 2
@JRBulman: There will be a clear divide here – younger premier league fans will be horrified while the older or fans of lower league teams see this every week!!
@Neil_Davies_: As good as it gets, them ones. Can see it all opening up a mile off, on the attackers blind side, go early & know you’re going to be able to leave plenty on him after the balls won. Near perfect that. 😍
@hereagain55: Good tackle, poor reaction to it.
@TomSCFC1863: Brilliant tackle.
@TJamesT2003: Well timed tackle , a great tackle that’s my CB right there
@ineffablenumpty: Great tackle and the fact it’s given as a foul, is exactly why I don’t watch football anymore.
@balc_top: Great tackle but in reality really no need to be throwing challenges like that in a pre-season 🤷♂️
@covjim: It’s pre season ffs..
@GregPer44138151: Well in my son. Did he get up and play on? Or was he taken to hospital?
@Sandance1888: Look at all the players rushing towards him man. Embarrassing. Games gone soft.
@dannybd85: Considering the ball went the direction of the challenge I’d say yeah it probably looked reckless but he gets the ball 🤷🏻♂️
@Mattygibb: Nothing at all wrong with this. Football becoming sterile. Need to start looking at the player on the floor. Guarantee nothing wrong with him, all a show in an attempt to get a player sent off.
@stephenaw85: Good tackle but maybe a bit full blooded for a friendly. In a competitive game love to see it tho
@MarcBoatwright: Perfect tackle that, we missed that lad #bwfc
@MKnowles1913: This is what we needed last season. Georgie Johnson is a white.
@martyndavies85: It’s a fantastic tackle with 100% bias, and a fantastic one without!
@cwatt957: Johnston and forino at back should make us more solid hopefully just need a couple of wing backs 👌
@JohnEustaceEra: Just me who doesn’t know why moise Kean has gone down? Great challenge
@Dpn76: Brilliant tackle but a bit OTT for preseason
@PaddyAtkin: Fair enough tackle purple made a meal of it
@aaronjames58: I do miss the days when these were okay.
@aaron_bwfc: Won the ball, great challenge 👌
@WestHam_Central: Beautiful challenge
@MRMAXCB: Great challenge.
@Scottjacko91: Fantastic tackle
@NorthbankShanks: Well timed!
@leethario: Belter of a tackle.
@Mikeyccfc: Excellent tackle. Games gone if that’s a foul.
@sammiej8787: What’s wrong with that didn’t even touch him 🤣
