Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass amuses fans with cheeky dig at Rotherham on podcast

Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass amuses fans with cheeky dig at Rotherham United when he appeared on the EFL podcast this week.

The 30 year old forward has taken a light-hearted jab at the Millers following their relegation to League One, with Sheffield Wednesday avoiding the drop on the final day of the season despite spending much of the season in the bottom three of the Championship table.

Despite their poor start under Xisco Munoz, they then managed to turn things around with Danny Rohl at the helm, picking up 16 wins in all competitions and finishing the season in 20th place with 53 points, three points clear of the relegation zone.

Rotherham meanwhile finished last with only 27 points, a massive 23 points behind Sheffield Wednesday.

Windass, who scored in the crucial matches, humorously spoke on Rotherham’s poor form, after they won just five league games and lost 29, in which lead to their relegation after a two-year stay in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday defeated Rotherham twice without conceding a goal.

Windass said the high points required to survive in the Championship were partly due to teams taking six points from Rotherham throughout the season.

“That’s only because everyone took six points off Rotherham! It’s usually only 42/43 (points needed to stay up), but everyone beat them, so we needed 50.”

“But yeah no it’s probably been the best standard of Championship for a long time, you look at the top four, nearly all of them are on 90 points so yeah that’s incredible in itself.

“I think Leeds, did they end up on 91/90 and didn’t get promoted so I don’t think that’s happened in a long time, so yeah the standard’s been really good as I said before I think the level of coaching in general and the Championship has gone up tenfold and then yeah it’s being a tough division in a lot of games because you can play against teams that you don’t think are great sides and you look at the players they’ve got but they play really good football with them the managers have them play good stuff.”

When asked about who he think will go up from the playoffs: “Bolton will go up. I still think Doncaster and Leeds will win the play-offs. With Leeds not making the top two, I do think there is a mental effect. Years ago when I was at Accrington, we lost out on goal difference.

“Looking back now I’m a bit older, the manager was, ‘argh, we’ve got to do the play-offs’. I don’t know if Leeds will be doing that but that mentality of it being a nightmare. We got knocked out in the semi-finals.

“Leeds need to get that behind them now. Norwich and West Brom are more buzzing they’re in the play-offs. It can mentally have an effect.”

On the 6th of May, Josh Windass put out a documentary titled ‘Now You’re Going To Believe Us’ and it sees him battles back from injury to try and help Sheffield Wednesday stay in the Championship.

The same day, he appeared on talkSPORT, speaking with Jeff Stelling, with the main takeaways being…

– DC had a meeting with the players at the start of the season and told them to aim for the play offs, backs up what Darren said about DC aiming for promotion this season

– Xisco never believed in the players

– IF Danny Röhl stays this summer… so clearly there is some uncertainty felt at the club and within the squad

– Josh swerved the direct question about whether he wanted to stay and just said discussions were ongoing
