Sheffield Wednesday sack manager after 10 games in charge amid worst start in club history

Sheffield Wednesday sack manager Xisco Muñoz after just 10 games in charge amid the worst start in the history of the club.

The Spaniard’s backroom staff have also left the club with immediate effect with the Owls sitting bottom of the Championship table with two points from 10 games played.

In total, Xisco managed his side to two draws and eight league defeats along with two cup draws to League Two opposition (winning one and losing one on penalties).

CLUB STATEMENT:

Sheffield Wednesday have parted company with Xisco Muñoz, who leaves Hillsborough with immediate effect.

Xisco’s backroom staff – Miguel Munoz, Miguel Gomila, Roberto Cuesta Roman and Antonello Brambilla – also depart the club.

Under-21s manager Neil Thompson will take the team for Saturday’s home game against Huddersfield Town in the Championship.

The Owls would like to thank Xisco and his staff for their services and wish them well for the future.

The process to appoint a new manager is now underway and we will make no further comment at this time.

This comes just hours after West Brom beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night with John Swift scoring the first-half winner for the Baggies.

“I’m very disappointed,” Xisco said. “We tried to change the formation, change the players.

“I think the players gave 100%, we received the goal and after that we had chances but it was very, very difficult for us to score.

“The difference in the Championship is these details and when you have individual mistakes, you have this problem.

“The team gave 100% to the very last minutes even though we are with one player less because of injury to Akin.

“I understand the fans and I understand the disappointment.

“It is very difficult. One of the most important things in the Championship is trying to have clean sheets. In the last game we received goals through set pieces and today with one action, they have a striker in the box, we have three players but the first shot is a goal.

“We need to improve a lot of things to try to have a more consistent performance. It’s hard for me, it’s hard for the staff, the players, the fans – everybody.

“It’s tough and all we can do is stick together and work hard to try to change the situations and try to put positive things in place.

“I know how the players are working, how they feel the pressure, we try to give all the best for them but right now we are in a very tough moment.

“I can say I am so sorry for the fans, it is very hard for them and we need to continue working to change the situation.”
