Sheffield Wednesday fans vent anger, boo side off, and leave early in defeat to Sunderland

Sheffield Wednesday fans vent anger, boo their side off, and leave early in their 3-0 defeat to Sunderland on Friday night.

It was always going to be a negative atmosphere, with the build-up clouded by a statement issued by owner Dejphon Chansiri, who took issue with being treated unfairly by his own club’s fans, adding that he’d not put any more money into the club.

Barry Bannan urged the Hillsborough faithful to get behind them, but instead, they were repaid with watching the Owls concede twice within the first eight minutes of the game.

Dan Ballard got on the end of an inswinging corner from Alex Pritchard to open the scoring on five minutes, with it was 2-0 shortly after when the Championship’s top scorer Jack Clarke made his way inside the 18-yard box and hit home his sixth of the season inside the right-hand post.

Clarke made no mistake from his spot kick to make it 3-0 with a 30th-minute penalty sent into the bottom corner.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Xisco Munoz:

“It’s difficult when you are in this situation. After half-time, the team was a little better, but the first 10 minutes were difficult for us. After that, the plan of the game doesn’t matter because we killed the game and after that, it is very difficult to react.

“One of the things that is important now is to change the dynamic, to try to repair the mentality and the confidence of everybody. I was a player, so I know it’s not easy in these moments. I want to put my focus on the football.

“Believe me, I am focusing on the next game. I am ready to do this. I know it’s not easy; it’s very difficult for everybody. The conversations I have with the boss [Chansiri] are personal conversations for me and for him.”

Sunderland’s Tony Mowbray:

“We got off to a great start and scored from the first set-play, which is good. We do a lot of work for and against set-plays – as I’m sure every team does – and it’s great to score one. We wanted to start fast. We were mindful of our last away game at Blackburn where we didn’t; they looked like Real Madrid for 20 minutes against us.

“Tonight we started fast, on the front foot and we caught them out a few times. It gave us a great platform to go on, keep the ball, ask questions of them and to get three before half-time was a great result. I’ve just said in the dressing room, they will be disappointed they weren’t more ruthless and didn’t score more goals. They were caught between keeping possession of the ball and having a bit more cut-and-thrust.

“But I can’t really complain tonight. To come away from home and score three goals again is good.”

Sunderland goalscorer Jack Clarke told Sky Sports:

“We had a game plan and we’ve worked on it all week – we had to put things right after the last game and we managed to show what we are all about.

“We’re a team, we reap the results up front but we wouldn’t be able to get the results without the boys at the back and (Anthony Patterson in goal).

“I didn’t feel like I took enough chances last year but I’m trying to put that right this year. It’s going alright at the moment so long may it continue.”

Luke O’Nien, Sunderland defender, told Sky Sports:

“It was frustrating (to lose 1-0 at home to Cardiff) the other day. We put that right this evening.

“Jack Clarke was magic and it was a good professional performance in front of our support.

“We have got a good mix and match (going forward and in defence) at the moment but we have to keep getting better.

“It’s not an easy place to come and play but we did our job well.”

As mentioned, Sheffield Wednesday fans vent anger, boo their side off, and leave early in defeat to Sunderland, this was the Twitter reaction…

@PageDcfc: May as well just delete club at this point

@DanielTwigg2208: alexa can we sack a manager at half time

@Matt_Smith_1983: Can’t wait for his 8 million word statement tomorrow

@super_owls: Dejphon Chansiri, get out of our club.

@LewisSm13427739: Worst part about this, is Disco will still be in charge on Monday morning, guaranteed!!!

@aidanlee96: If you rage quit a game of fifa it goes down as a 3-0 loss. Just don’t come back out, make it better for yourselves

@RocketRawson: Fully paid member and so are my children. We will not be back until this stops. This is shambolic and the club is so badly run, I’m ashamed to be a part of it. It’s become a circus run by clowns 🤡 in cheap suits. Ticket prices are vile and so is everything associated! #swfc

@ulyatt1: As a sunderland fan i’m pleased my team is now performing well. It’s not that long ago since we went through the pain of dispirited performances and owners who didn’t relate to the fans. Wednesday are a massive club with great fans. i hope you turn the corner soon.

@MrPaulPashley: Well done Xisco. Ripped the squad up and it’s completely back fired.

@sg_miner21: Cheated your way back to the Championship and sleepwalking your way back to league one, what a waste of a team, at least Barnsley would win a few games

@mooowl: that has to be the worst match I’ve seen since the last match we played 🤣😭

@GreggSAFC: Honestly, that was pathetic. Got a lot of respect for Wednesday and the fans, but we (Sunderland) barely broke sweat tonight.

@AlexYoung1867: Enough is enough Xisco do us all a favour and resign tonight i don’t know what you do in training the players look dead on there feet after 60mins

@swfcjackson1998: Final whistle goes and I’ve been back in local for 20 min. Live 30 miles away 😂

@therealtbailey: Chansiri OUT. Xisco OUT. Absolutely gutless. Get out of the club.
