Sheffield Wednesday fans slam Charlton chant as match is halted for seven minutes

Sheffield Wednesday fans slam Charlton Athletic’ supporters for a chant which came as the match is halted for around seven minutes.

On the 9th minute mark of the two side’s opening League One fixture, Owls forward Callum Paterson was stretchered off with a head injury.

The 26 year old, who was named in the starting XI to lead the Wednesday line alongside Andre Green and Jaden Brown, was caught on the head while defending an Addicks corner.

He laid on the ground with everyone in the ground falling silent as he received treatment before he was taken away for more treatment and replaced by debutant Florian Kamberi.

However as majority of supporters at The Valley watched on with worry, a group of Charlton fans thought it would be a good time to mock the Sheffield Wednesday away support.

Fan Sarah Kerton @sarkerton noticed this and said via her Twitter account: “Calum Paterson remains down with a head injury, #swfc fans quiet and concerned as he’s being strapped to a stretcher, and a loud enough section of Charlton fans singing “your support is f’ng shit” during the stoppage. Hope he’s alright.”

Concern over his wellbeing has now been eased after Darren Moore revealed that he’s come out of it with ‘a shiner’ on the back of his head, but nothing worse at this stage.

“We’re really pleased to see him in there, sat up with the boys and smiling. They don’t give him any sympathy, but for me he stopped a certain goal there. It was a brave, brave header, but unfortunately he got taken out for it. He’ll do the protocol for that, and we’re hoping that in the next 24/48 hours he doesn’t suffer any reactions to it.”

When asked if he’d be out of action for a spell, Moore replied, “He may have a spell out, I’m not sure on the protocol, but whatever it is we’ll follow it. It’s important for his health – but hopefully he’ll have no reactions and he can join up with the team. I’ll get advice from the doctor.”

There was plenty of Twitter reaction when Sheffield Wednesday fans slam Charlton chant as the match is halted for seven minutes due to Paterson’s injury…

The game itself however played out to a goalless draw, but before that, Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard bizarrely stepped onto the pitch playing an electric guitar, he is/was in a band named Arsin. He went on playing the instrument for several minutes.

Anyway, there was some first half problems for Chris Gunter by Jaden Brown while Lewis Wing and Dennis Adeniran moved the ball forward nicely alongside Barry Bannan.

But it wasn’t until the second half that the first shot on target appeared and while they are both tipped to finish high for the season, they spent the game cancelling each other out.

We saw plenty of half-chances from Charlton throughout the encounter with Barry Bannan only putting Wednesday’s best chance wide of the post late on in what was a damp one in south-east London.

A point for each promotion rival is a solid way to start the season, next up for Charlton is AFC Wimbledon at home in the Carabao Cup First Round and then away to Oxford United in the league. Sheffield Wednesday lost to Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup before their league opener, so their next game is when they host Doncaster next weekend.
