Sheffield United investigate after David McGoldrick is racially abused

Sheffield United are to investigate after David McGoldrick is racially abused online, hours after Wilfried Zaha suffered the same this weekend.

The Blades forward has become the latest Premier League footballer to become the victim of yet another disgraceful attack over the colour of their skin.

The Premier League club have offered McGoldrick their full support and will be making sure they will identify the perpetrator of the abuse.

He took a screenshot of the abusive message he received, then uploaded it to his social media accounts, writing above it ‘2020 and this is life’.

The message was sent to him by ‘mma_notorious_mma’, it read: ‘You f****** dirty n*****. Your n***** life defo doesn’t matter. F*** you ya bold c*** WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOU PLAYED MAURE [Manchester United] YOU F****** S*** APE.’

Sheffield United said: “As a club we will support David McGoldrick and will do all we can to find the perpetrator of this disgusting message.

“We will work with the relevant authorities to ensure the person behind this post is brought to justice.

“This cannot continue. Something needs to change.”

The abuse came after McGoldrick hit a stunning brace against Chelsea which helped Chris Wilder’s side to a dominant a much needed 3-0 win.

The incident was reported just a day after West Midlands Police arrested a 12-year-old boy, after racist messages were sent to Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

He received a message saying ‘you better not score tomorrow you black c**n before the poster added ‘or I’ll come to your house dressed as a ghost.’

A poster was sent, showing a picture of a Klu Klux Klan gathering together, this is another threat, and another displaying an edited picture of a box of cornflakes, instead it had the words ‘c**nflakes’ across it and displayed a man with his face blacked up.

“We were alerted to a series of racist messages sent to a footballer today and after looking into them and conducting checks, we have arrested a boy,” read a WM Police tweet.

“The 12-year-old from Solihull has been taken to custody. Thanks to everyone who raised it. Racism won’t be tolerated.”

Speaking to Sky Sports before the arrest, Hodgson added: “It’s been highlighted at the moment anyway with the Black Lives Matter movement and everyone seems to be making such an effort to eradicate this behaviour.

“It is very sad that, on the day of a game, a player wakes up to this cowardly and despicable abuse. It’s right Wilf has made people aware of it and I don’t think this is something you should keep quiet about.

“He wants to put off one of our best players from playing well today, but to do it in the way he has chosen is totally inexcusable.”

The Premier League said: “This behaviour is completely unacceptable and the Premier League stands alongside Wilfried Zaha in opposing this, and discrimination in any form.

“We will continue to support players, managers, coaches and their family members who receive serious discriminatory online abuse.”

The incident is just the latest to be highlighted from over the duration of the current campaign, involving managers, players and pundits past and present receiving horrific racist messages on social media.

Just two weeks ago, the Premier League launched a new system online to allow Premier League players to report online abuse with a click of a button.

The system is also available to coaches, managers and family members and the league could pursue legal action on the behalf of any recipient.

There was a huge reaction as Sheffield United confirm they will investigate after David McGoldrick is racially abused…
