A Sheffield United fan has been jailed for pushing a man onto the railway tracks while also knocking another person out and stamping.

Footage was posted on social media, getting over two millions views on Twitter alone, with it showing an incident which occurred on a platform at a station, with a fan wearing a Sheffield United shirt throwing his fist at some of the victims.

He ended up knocking one over, off the platform onto the tracks, then goes for all the others within the group, all while another male is calling his name, in an attempt at trying to calm him down.

BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE STATEMENT:

A man has been jailed after pushing a man onto the railway tracks and stamping on another mans head, following a British Transport Police investigation.

Lewis Clifford, 38, and of Whitwell Common, Worksop, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Mansfield Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 8 January to eight months imprisonment and received a six-year Football Banning Order

The court heard how just before 8pm on Saturday 16 September 2023, Clifford was at Retford railway station with his family having returned from an away football game between Tottenham and Sheffield United.

Clifford was wearing a Sheffield United football shirt, and three members of the public at the station engaged Clifford in banter over the shirt. This became heated and an argument started.

Clifford struck one of the victims to the head, knocking him onto the live tracks. As he tried to get off the tracks, a high-speed train passed through on the line only a few meters behind him.

He then punched one of the other victims in the head, before punching the third man to the floor. The man hit his head on a metal post and appeared to fall unconscious.

Clifford then ran over and stamped on the back of the manโ€™s head whilst he was lying face down on the platform. Clifford then left the station with his family and headed into Retford.

A CCTV appeal was sent out to the press and public featuring an image of Clifford following the incident, and he was identified. Clifford was interviewed and later charged.

Investigating officer DC Lee Walker said: โ€œI am pleased with the result in this case. Clifford acted recklessly and violently and was lucky his actions did not result in any deaths.

โ€œThe prison sentence and banning order should serve as a reminder to anyone, football fan or not, that would act with violence towards others on the railway network that their actions will not be tolerated.โ€

Marg Heald: Sad it has to come to violence ๐Ÿ˜”

Jason Dix: just watching in shock over that video, utterly disgusting, and all because of some so called banter that got stupidly and unnecessarily got out of hand, grow up ffs, suppose to be adults, really isn’t that hard to go to a football match, support your team and come back home again safely. now no doubt regretting what happened. to go a fight like that, sending someone onto the train line, then punching and even stamping on someone’s head when they’re down on the ground, sickening way to act. just as bad if not worse if provoked.

Ben Yeomans: Good, gets what he deserves

Kazza Vernals: Serves him right!!

Chris Doolan: It’s not enough, should be jailed for longer. Stain on the club

Mark Larden: Chris Doolan Was you there then? What was the context. Because to me there has been none provided.

Chris Doolan: Mark Larden stand on someone’s head you deserve alot more then 8 months regardless of context. No reason to resort to fists unless your below average intelligence and can’t think for yourself.
