Shaka Hislop speaks emotionally for the first time on collapsing while reporting live on TV, issuing a new video on social media.
The ex-Reading, Newcastle, West Ham, Portsmouth goalkeeper has offered thanks for the support he received after his “awkward” fall on Sunday in California.
The 54-year-old had been working as an analyst for US broadcaster ESPN, only to wobble, stumbled and collapse down to the ground during a pre-match pitch-side interview.
Dan Thomas, who presented alongside Hislop in the game between AC Milan and Real Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, called for assistance as the channel cut for a commercial break.
Temperatures in California on Sunday hit 30C, but it’s unclear if heat was a factor in Hislop’s collapse.
Sending all our best wishes to Shaka Hislop who collapsed before the Real Madrid v AC Milan friendly in California last night.
It has been reported that he is now conscious and up talking which is positive news. ๐ pic.twitter.com/nZ1Zkj9gVr

He posted to the video: A few hours after recording this message I learned of the passing of Trevor Francis and Chris Bart Williams, a player I knew, played against, and coached with at Quinnipiac. When life gives you reason to pause, take it, be grateful for it. Iโve hated the experience of being this spoken about. But I have never been more appreciative for the collective support. Thank you, every single one of you. I am grateful.”
Speaking in the clip: “Well, that was awkward. What a 24 hours this has been.
“Listen. Every softened life gives you a moment to pause and and this was mine.
“There’s so much I have to be thankful for.
“My wife, kids, family, loved ones, friends, peopleI’ve shared a space with over the years and have lost touch with for whatever reason.
“And I’ve reached out either directly or indirectly. Thank you. My response now has to be to seek out the best medical opinion that I can get and listen to what my doctors have to say.
“In closing, I’d like to say thanks to Dan and the ESPN family, the camera operators, the medical staff atthe Rose Bowl, all who responded in the way that they did and afforded me the care that I got.
“Thank you. Can know now that even when we argue and disagree, I have the fullest support of each and every one of you.
“I’m looking forward to getting back doing what I enjoy doing most. See you in a bit.”
